Sold new through Rallye Motors of Roslyn, NY, the factory maintenance booklet shows that the car was serviced there through 1997 and 11k miles. Sometime shortly after that the car was relocated to Switzerland. Services at Swiss dealer Pichler GFG AG are stamped through 2005 and 59k miles. In 2006, while traveling through Switzerland, an American gentleman purchased the car from Pichler GFG AG and had it shipped back to the US. The purchase and subsequent importation documents, as well as factory manuals, will come with the car. When the car arrived in the US in early 2007, it had just over 60k miles on it. We purchased the car from this same gentleman who bought the car in Switzerland, and the car now has just over 100k miles on it. As is sits now, this is a well-spec'd, 100k-mile "driver-level" example with a known history. While its a bit tired from a cosmetic standpoint, this awesome small sedan is truly great to drive. Exterior: - Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is shown in detail. Blemishes are all shown close-up and under direct sunlight. There are a handful of scratches, as well as a scuff, on the driver's rear quarter where it meets the rear door. There is also a chip in the windshield. - Nautical Blue paint is nice, but not perfect. It would really benefit from a wet sand and wax. There are a couple spots on the hood that look like they were buffed thin; overall the finish shows a bit of age. Hood, roof, and trunk lid are cloudy/faded. - Body is nice and straight. A couple little door dings, but nothing significant. - Wheels are in good shape. A couple little curb scuffs around the outer edge, nothing too glaring. Vredestein tires are in good shape, DOT number indicates they were manufactured in 2008. While the car has covered nearly 40k miles since 2008, that was on a different set of wheels. The car will come with just the set (5) of wheels you see in the photos, which were kept in dry storage. - Glass and light lenses are clear and crack-free aside from that windshield chip. Lights and signals are all functional. - Panel fitment is excellent, all four doors as well as the trunk open and close nice and smoothly. Interior: - Again, please defer to the photos and video. Interior is quite good. Seats are still nice and firm and supportive, not blown out and soft. Front seats look great, though there is a tear on the driver's outer bolster. No burst seams, punctures, or significant scuffs aside from that one spot on the driver's seat. Rears have some crease marks and light scratches, good overall. Headliner is clean and tight. Sunroof is functional. - Dash is excellent. No cracks, fade, or anything of the sort. Gauge cluster looks great, none of that greying of the black gauge faces that we often see on cars of this era. Wood around the gear lever does have a few hairline cracks, but still has a nice deep color /shine to it. Not old and tired-looking. - Odometer reads just shy of 104k and is functional and accurate. Mileage is well-documented through service records since new. The original maintenance booklet is stamped through the first twelve years and 59k miles of the car's life. - Interior lights and dash lights are all functional. No warning lights (dash light seen in the video is for wiper fluid). - Radio (AM/FM/CD) is functional. - R134a air conditioning was serviced in 2012, no longer blows cold. Heat/fan are functional. - Power seats are fully functional. - Heavy duty Mercedes floormats are in great shape, as is the original carpet. Underbody & Mechanical: - The car fires right up first turn, idles cool and steady, is nice and quiet, and accelerates effortlessly. Being the only W124 aside from the Porsche-produced 500E to be V8-powered, the little 400E actually really moves! This car is a blast to drive. Small and nimble, but with the rock solid feel of an older Benz. No noises or tendencies of concern. No suspension rattles or anything of the sort, ride quality is outstanding. The car tracks straight under both acceleration and braking. - Underbody is OK, not great. There is some rust visible in the rearmost corners of the inner rocker panels, as well as some surface rust on various suspension components. While it's far from spotless underneath, the car is structurally sound. To discuss purchasing or request additional photos/info, please reach out to Jake at 773-303-6122, .
