Description of 1988 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class -- |
It's one seriously cool example of vintage German automotive design! This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL was its manufacturer's coveted open-air flagship during its era and even now it not only retains an impressive level of originality, but also offers a level of mechanical precision few cars from its era can match. It's hard to beat the exhilarating feeling you get being out on the road with just the blue sky above you and this classic thoroughly delivers on that experience. Just as is the case with so many movies and songs, this is a model that only gets better with time. Mercedes had long since gained traction with the American car buying public by the time the 560SL was first released, realizing that the market wanted a more substantially proportioned convertible than what they had previously offered - so they equipped their R107 line, of which this Benz is a member, with a wider and slightly longer body to provide a more comfortable cabin and better cornering. Just one glance at this '88 and you can see why Mercedes chose not to mess with the design for so long - even though it's been more than 30 years since it came out, few classics can match its timeless curb appeal. With its white exterior still dressed in its original color and looking sharp, it's just an effortlessly elegant car, yet sporty and agile at the same time. When darkening skies threaten, you'll have a couple of options for protection, including a blue cloth convertible top, as well as a color matched white accessory hardtop, which is still in good shape, but will need a minor bit of attention to seal properly. Glance through the window and you'll see that the blue leather interior thoroughly defies the passage of time, with a pair of plush buckets in place that are free of the marked creasing you'd rightfully expect in a car of this age, bracketed by door panels that sit snugly against their frames. From all appearances, this car has been fortunate to have been treated with respect during its years of service - there's no signs of abuse or unintended mishaps inside. Up front, the dash area features factory gauges that still function as intended, and a fresh, uncracked pad over the top. The fresh appearance of the carpet suggests it was recently added not long ago - it lines the trunk as well and is as clean as can be. A Sony AM/FM/CD stereo, the only deviation from factory configuration, has been added for an enhanced audio experience. Raise the hood and you'll find a well-maintained engine compartment, with a fuel-injected 5.6-liter V8 sitting at the center. It holds the distinction of being Mercedes' top tier engine option at the time of its release, and is still in full possession of its considerable power to make this droptop a fun ride, including just under 300 lb-ft of torque to push you back in your seat when you step into it. The powerplant pairs with a 4-speed automatic transmission whose overdrive gear provides nice low revs at highway speeds. Armed with power disc brakes at all four corners, this SL comes to a stop quickly when called on, and its broad stance, independent suspension and smooth power steering combine to make it an accomplished corner carver as it rides on a set of 15" stock Mercedes wheels that, like the rest of the car, are in impressive condition. This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL does its world-renowned manufacturer proud, and it's not often you come across a classic that's more than 30 years old and still runs this strong. Call today! |
