After almost 20 years of production for the previous generation SL-class, Mercedes launched this new R129 generation for 1989 with substantial improvements in both technology and safety over the outgoing model. The new SL had a first-of-its-kind roll bar in case of a roll-over, ABS and dual front airbags were standard, traction control and an electronic limited slip differential were standard for the 1991 model year. Other new technology advancements included power side mirrors, power rearview mirror and full power seats which allowed this SL to be the first passenger vehicle to have seat belts integrated into the seats. Lastly, this new SL had a full power retractable convertible top. Standard equipment included a color matched Aluminum hard top. The 300 SL is powered by a well-balanced 3.0 liter DOHC inline 6-cylinder engine producing 217bhp. It has always been well serviced and cared for regardless of use as shown in the exceptional condition it shows today. Recent servicing includes fluids, new tires, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, new soft top and rebuilds of the convertible top hydraulics and factory Becker radio. Signal Red was the only option choice for these early R129s in which the lower body panel moldings were color matched. All other colors had contrasting moldings. This rare 5-speed SL is in excellent condition throughout. It is complete with all books, tools, keys, first aid kit, original window sticker, factory hard top, jack, original spare and service records.
