Description of 1984 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class |
I am offering my unrestored 1984 Mercedes Benz 380SL for sale. It has 123,747 miles. I am the third owner and have records back to 1985. The original owners manual and service booklet are included. I purchased the car from an individual in Texas but it was originally sold in Oklahoma City, OK. It was purchased by the second owner in Texas in 1985. Currently this car can be driven and enjoyed. The interior was replaced several years ago with original style Navy blue leather covers which was the original color. There is a separation of the seam in one location on the passenger seat that can be seen. The drivers seat is fine. The carpet is excellent as well as the door panels, and dash pad is original and not cracked. The clock does not work. The radio does not work. The AC works well. The sun visor foam has deteriorated and they are baggy. There is a vinyl tear as seen on the vinyl boot. The central locking ignition key was replaced previously after a key was broken off so there are two keys. One is for the door locks and one is for the ignition. The silver paint is the original color Astro Silver metallic. The body panels are straight. After purchase, I realized the right rear or passenger quarter panel was replaced. This was done several years ago. The car was evidently repainted at that time. The passenger door closes tightly but the fit is not perfect. It is out at the top about 1/4â€. There is no blistering of the paint. It looks good but there is some fine crazing of the clear coat on the hood that is hard to see unless carefully inspected. There are some superficial scratches. When stored the same right rear quarter was evidently exposed to the adjacent parked car. When the door of that car was opened it chipped the paint multiple times in a 1 or so square foot area. This has been touched up and not blended perfectly. There is no body damage there just a quick spray touch up. The convertible top was replaced by the previous owner. The belly pan is solid as seen in the photos. I don't see any evidence of rust. The rockers are solid. The car spent almost all of its life in Texas. The trunk is solid without evidence of any previous damage. The jack is there. There is a hard top that is nice with a clean headliner. The engine sounds good. It starts easily and runs well without smoke or unusual noises. The automatic transmission shifts without trouble. The rear end is quiet. The tires were replaced two years ago and have around 2500 miles. It starts easily. Since purchase it has been hard to start three times. If the accelerator is pushed to the floor, it will start. Since it is so infrequent, it has not been professionally addressed. It does drip some oil. When I purchased it in 1918, the oil and filters were changed. An idle control unit was replaced. The coolant and brakes were flushed. The left tie rod end was replaced, as well as the center link and steering damper. It was aligned. The steering shaft coupler was also replaced. The car was professionally evaluated at the time for reasons stated below. As mentioned, I have records back to the second owner. I have a clear Kansas antique title. In general, it is a solid reliable car that is 36 years old. My mother was 89 when I purchased the car for her in 2018. An SL had been on her bucket list for decades. She put about 1700 miles over the past two years. At 91, she is not driving now and she has had her fun so it’s time to sell. Mechanically, I felt comfortable with her driving it. It never stranded her. She was the envy of her friends. My wife and friends thought I was nuts. I have no regrets. Ask any question and I will do my best to answer it honestly. My Ebay feedback supports this. I want this car to go to a good home and I want the buyer to be happy with the purchase. I have many photos and I am willing to take more. I can have photos posted on Photo bucket. It will be available for inspection by appointment during the auction. Ideally, it should be inspected prior to purchase like any other car. There may have been concerns not mentioned. The car is sold “as is, where is†without guarantee written or implied. The car will be picked up at my house. I will not deliver. I require a $500 deposit within 24 hours and the balance in 5 days. The car must be picked up within 30 days. It will not leave here until satisfactory payment has been made. If you cannot meet these requests, please do not bid. It is located in Lawrence, KS 66047. Thanks for your interest. |
