Description of 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E |
This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is a true German-style muscle car. After all, it takes the company's big V8 motor and stuffs it into a smaller/lighter package. But what makes these unique is that the work was done by Porsche. So to find a well-kept example that combines two performance legends is a deal that will make you pay attention. The Mercedes W124 is the mid-size luxury car that defined its era, so the look of this one will always be a classic. But the 500E also has some instantly defining features that let people know it's something extra special. The extra flare in the fenders give it a more square-shouldered muscular look. In fact, those fenders were so wide that Porsche had to assemble the cars, because they were too wide for the regular Mercedes assembly line. Oh yes, this is a true Mercedes hand-built by Porsche! And since you have two names of precision and sophistication involved, it's nice to have this level of presentation today. The dark gray retains a nice gloss in the sunshine. Plus, there's a timeless style to the lighter gray lower section that's also matched to the full-length pinstripe. It's a nice look that you'll want to keep in your garage for decades (also why this one is coming off of long-term ownership.) The interior has a preserved look of a car that was respectfully enjoyed. After all, these are quite rare (less than 1,600 were likely ever imported to the USA.) The 500E was a specialty machine, and so it came with a big price tag and loaded with the best options. You get automatic A/C climate control, power windows, power locks, cruise control, the factory AM/FM/cassette stereo, and a power sunroof. A modern classic also means modern safety including dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes. Up front, the supple leather seats are both power adjustable and heated. In the rear, you're reminded this sedan was really a sports car. The middle seat was replaced with a center console to even give the ones in the back a more bucket-like level of comfort. The big reason why Porsche was hired to develop the 500E was to fit the big 5.0-liter V8 under the hood. This 32-valve DOHC powerhouse was a true wonder from Mercedes. The multi-valve setup made it quick from the stoplights and the V8 had plenty of top-end power to be an autobahn king. So since this motor could live up to the sporting heritage of the SL model line, it was a true rocket in the lighter 500E. Porsche not only figured out how to get the V8 into this sedan, but also they worked their magic on the fully independent suspension. Plus, the a four-speed automatic transmission w/overdrive was rebuilt 2006. Add in power steering and four-wheel power disc brakes, and this specialty Benz knows how to be a speedy and comfortable machine. Complete with maintenance records and owner's manual, this 500E is a true modern classic. So if you like both collecting and driving, this one has the pedigree and condition you demand. Call now! |
