Description of 1971 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class |
GR Auto Gallery is please to present this wonderful 1971 Mercedes 280 SL to the world stage. The "Pagoda" SL series was introduced in March of 1962 at the Geneva Auto Shoe. This revolutionary new model had some big shoes to fill as it was to replace the 300 and 190 sl models of prior years. Mercedes engineering, together with elegance and practicality, made the pagoda top SL one of the most distinctive designs of its era. The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 sl offered here was purchased new at AutoHaus on Edens Mercedes Benz, of Northbrook, IL on June 19, 1971. The car is shown here finished in factory Midnight Blue over its highly original interior. Since our recent acquisition, I have personally driven this 280 sl over 150 miles in 2-day period. It is hands down, on of the finest driving 280 sl's that I have experienced. The car performs well in all driving situations; stop and go traffic, cruising down your favorite country road or flat out highway speeds, the car is stable and can be driven with confidence. Since 2016, over $22,000.00 dollars has been invested into the mechanical reliability, drivability and mechanical safety of this 280sl. The Midnight Blue exterior paint has just been professionally refurbished with a high-level detail. It shows excellent in all areas, lays flat and is deep and glossy. The exterior chrome and trim are said to be original to the car and remain in excellent condition. The interior remains highly original with the exception of new carpet and sound deadening material installed 3 years ago. The original radio works and tunes great, all the heater slides and knobs operate as they should, the blower motor and fans all operate, the glove box light works, turn signals and lights all work as they should. The under dash AC unit was dealer installed in 1971, remains original, the fan speeds all work but does not blow cold. Under the hood has not been detailed but is very tidy and attractive showing off all restored Bosch fuel injection system and refurbished valve cover. The 280sl remains an excellent investment in the global collector car arena. They are elegant, sporty and extremely fun to drive, for these reasons the demand remains strong. The car here is a wonderful example with excellent mechanical fitness; it is turn-key and ready for immediate enjoyment. It comes complete with jack, spare, recent service records mentioned above, all original books including: Service and warranty policy, Becker Audio supplements, Service book with ID plate, Owners manual, Parts catalog, and original Mercedes plastic portfolio. |
