The original owner, who lived in the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest, put just over 30k miles on the car before selling it to a local doctor in 1996. Over the second (current) owner’s 24-year stewardship the car has served as a summertime driver and lakefront cruiser, covering right about 1000 miles each year. These 560SLs are tremendous cars when well-taken-care-of and responsibly kept, and this car absolutely meets that criteria. The black pearl paint is excellent and entirely original, as confirmed with a paint gauge, and the original creme beige leather interior is equally well-preserved. This car will come with the original books and manuals, complete with maintenance stamps all the way through the original owner’s 30k miles of ownership, as well as the original build sheet and a handful of other minor service records. Exterior: Please take a good look through the photos and video, as the car is shown in detail. Blemishes are all shown close-up, though there are few. Most noteworthy blemishes are some scratches behind the rear seat area from taking the hardtop on and off. There are also a number of small mid-line chips on the driver’s side quarter; the owner’s teenage daughter routinely parked her car alongside the 560sl in their garage, and as a result there are a number of little chips on the driver’s side. Paint chips, not dings. This car has never seen any paint work, as confirmed with an elcometer, and the original Black Pearl paint presents extremely well. A nice deep and glassy shine, not swirly or with any noteworthy signs of age aside from the aforementioned blemishes. This car is extremely dry and has clearly always been babied – no rust bubbling or corrosion to be found. Even the corners of the rockers are nice and solid, clean and black, which we so rarely see on these cars. All the typical rust spots are bone dry – no bubbling around the license plate lights or around the corners of the headlights. Black soft top is original and in good condition….a couple very minor scuffs, nothing too significant. Factory hardtop will come with the car and is reported to be in similarly excellent shape to the rest of the car (top is in storage at the owner’s home at the moment, I will add photos once it’s delivered to our facility). Glass is all clear and crack-free, as are light lenses. Polished surfaces are nice, minimal oxidation. Wheels are in nice shape, only the slightest bit of wear, no actual damage or significant signs of age. Tires are good – no observable wear or dryness and the DOT number indicates they were manufactured in 2017. Doors open and close nice and smooth, panel fitment is spot-on throughout. Interior: Again, please defer to the photos and video. Creme beige leather complements the black pearl exterior very well. Interior is pretty impressive. Really the only things to call out are nonfunctional air conditioning (R12, not yet converted to R134), as well as a couple very light hairline cracks in the lower corners of the wood-looking area where the power window controls are. Seats are firm and comfortable, not blown out or well worn, and have not been reupholstered. Some slight wear on the driver’s outer bolster, nothing through. Original carpeting presents very well – no noteworthy discoloring, tears, or fraying. An aftermarket set of floor mats will come with the vehicle as well. Gauges are all functional and the odometer reading of 54,035 is accurate. Fan/heat is good, original Becker Grand Prix radio with cassette player is good, wipers, lights and signals are all good. Power windows roll up and down as they should, soft top (manually-operated) fits nice and snug. Underbody/Under the Hood: Please take a look at the underbody photos, as the car is documented in detail. Underside is in excellent condition. No jack point damage, through rust, or other damage. Rockers are free of bubbling. Nothing to note other than the regular surface rust on exhaust components. Car is truly in impressive shape. This car is ready to be used and enjoyed as-is. No tendencies of any concern whatsoever. It starts right up, idles cool, steady, and quiet, effortlessly pulls hard through the rev range, shifts smoothly and on-time, tracks straight, brakes straight and effectively, and the ride quality is outstanding. Steering and suspension feel nice and tight. This car is truly just what you would hope for from a two-owner, 54k-mile 560SL survivor. Buy with confidence, this is a good one!
