Description of 1974 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

This Mercedes 450 SL has been in my wife’s family since her grandfather ordered it from Germany and signed for it on May 30, 1974. The original bill of sale, which I have, lists this 450 SL Coupe Roadster as coming with the following standard equipment: ElectronicFuel injection, Power Steering, Dual Circuit Power Assisted four-wheel discbrakes, four-way adjustable fully reclining front bucket seats, electric quartzclock, steeering lock, heated rear window, fog lights, full tufted carpeting,two-speed winshield wipers with intermittent mist control, tachometer andradial ply tires. Accessories and non-standard equipment include: Cruise control, central locking, Europa stereo, Automatic Antenna, Air Conditioning, electric windows (front), tinted glass, light alloy wheels and a DK Brown soft top.

I was told she never drove the car in the winter because she thought the car was too extravagant and could get damaged. As a result, this car was garage kept and is in very good original condition. This 450 has a 4.5L V8 engine and a 4-speedautomatic transmission, this invigorating import can get up and go. The top shows very well and the windows are all crystal clear. One short joyride in this German drop-top and you will be in love. My wife and I only drive it on weekends and have only put 6,472 miles on it since we bought the car from her uncle in 2007 not long after her grandmother passed. The car is painted in what they called Harvest Beige exterior with Tobacco Brown removeable hard top. It really is beautiful. The soft top has a couple small tears in it, but we mostly just drive it with the top off in the cooler months. It has been a fun weekend car, but I just bought a ’74 Javelin and my garage is FULL. The only disappointment in this car is the radio my uncle put in it, which currently does NOT work. Other than that, the car has been very well maintained and I have ALL the service records (hard copies and digital).

I also have the original manuals, COMPLETE service records including the original bill of sale and clear title. While prepping this car for sale I found the original tools that came with the car with the Mercedes emblem AND Made in West Germany Stamp! Very cool. I also found a trunk pack with Original maps of Ohio and West Virginia dated from the 70’s.This car has a lot of original details I am sure I am missing.

Admittedly, I know very little about Mercedes, I am more of muscle car guy, so sorry if I can not answer many technical questions about this car. I do know this car runs well and will make a great weekend car for someone who appreciates how these older, heavy Mercedes used to float on the road. When you hear the thud of the door closing you know this car is made of heavy steel and not the plastic we have today. My wife’s family adored her grandparents and all of them took great care of their mother’s old car. A little sad to see it go. Good luck.
