Description of 1990 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

This 1990 Mercedes-Benz Wolf 250GD spent time in Afghanistan with the German military before being acquired by the Expedition Motor Company (EMC) for restoration (make sure not to miss video links at end of description). A body-off restoration was subsequently undertaken and includeda bare metal repaint, a custom interior, rebuilds of the engine and gearbox, as well as all new suspension, lighting, braking and steering components, and more as detailed in the listing. Power comes from the believed-original 2.5-liter diesel inline-five routing power through an Ironbox 5-speed manual gearbox with a crawler first gear. Modifications include a snorkel, a Vintage Air system, LED lighting, a custom soft top, upgraded audio, black steel wheels with BF-Goodrich tires, and more. A post-restoration service was conducted prior to the seller acquiring it from Expedition Motors in 2018 and a recent oil/fuel filter change was also just completed.
During restoration, the body was stripped, media blasted, and then repainted in blue.According to the EMC, no filler was used and new sheet metal was welded-in as necessary. Anti-corrosive primer was applied prior to the repaint and the body was wet-sanded and polished upon completion. Clear turn signal lenses are fitted, along with LED directional indicators, headlights and taillamps. The body was removed from the frame, which was media blasted and powder coated in black.
The braking system benefited from machined rear drums and rebuilt front calipers, as well asnew front rotors, hoses, lines, pads, and rear shoes. Suspension work performed during the restoration included new springs, shock absorbers, urethane bushings, tie-rod ends, and a new steering damper. Black steel wheels wear BF-Goodrich Mud-Terrain tires including the rear-mounted swing-out spare.
A custom black soft top was fitted for shelter from the elements. Exterior modifications include a fender-mounted snorkel, and a 5.2-gallon jerrycan mounted to the body.
The interior is trimmed in a custom 2-tone brown leather and features a Blaupunkt radio and door speakers, Gen IV Vintage Air system with heating, sound deadening material, and multiple power outlets. The odometer which showed just under 15k kilometers (9k miles) at the time of restoration, is now at just over 17K kilometers.
EMC also fitted the truck with new glass for the both side windows and windshield, along with new seals and rubber trim. The front windshield can be lowered to enable clear field of fire out the front of the vehicle.

Power comes from a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter diesel mated to aIronbox 5-speed manual transmission with a crawler first gear. During the build, the engine was tested for compression and oil pressure prior to being removed and disassembled. Various items including the head, camshaft, and block were inspected for wear, while work included the following:

  • Engine block cleaned, prepped, and refinished
  • Cylinder head disassembled, checked for warpage, and planed
  • Installed new front and rear crankshaft seals
  • Cylinder head bolts and gasket
  • Radiator recored
  • Water pump
  • New oil pan gasket
  • Various components Cadmium plated
All underbody hard-components were powder-coated and covered in anti-corrosive primer. New brake and fuel lines were fitted, along with new body mounts and wheel studs as required. The gearbox was removed, disassembled, and all components were inspected. The gearbox housing was refinished, and the transmission benefits from new seals, a clutch, and throw-out bearing.
Asking price for a new build from EMC is believed to be > $100K.
