https://imageshack.com/a/I3jw7/1 Link to YouTube Walk-Around Video: (Note: I stated 248K in the video but it was dark and I read it wrong) https://youtu.be/6OH-SM_3JkU It was the 13th day of September 1997 when my little engineer wife strolled into Mission Viejo Imports Mercedes-Benz (now Mercedes-Benz of Laguna Niguel) and plunked down the largest amount she had ever paid for an automobile, with a little help from me. It had belonged to a one owner lady and had 33,800 miles on it when we bought it as a Mercedes-Benz certified vehicle. The W124 had stickered new for $72K. I remember them showing us a print out of it, but we don’t have the original sticker unfortunately. It did not come with the car. VIN: WDBEA92EXRF278008 Over the past 23 years of ownership she spent $34,508.76 or thereabouts. Surely even an aerospace engineer can lose a receipt or two from time to time. Anyway, the rundown on service and maintenance is all listed below. No expense was sparred and after the warranty period elapsed all work was performed by Stefan at German Imports in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Stefan is a real deal Mercedes Benz mechanic from Germany and is well known in South Orange County as one of the best mechanics in the area, also just an amazing person. He knows this car intimately. THE BODY & PAINT The body on this car is 100% original and roughly 90% original paint. I have been detailing cars since I was 10 years old and prepare collector vehicles for concour events in and around Southern CA, as well as judge at many of these events. The paint looks as good as the day we bought it back in 1997. There is nothing like the Glasurit paint that Mercedes used back in those days. I compare it to porcelain, as it is hard and incredibly durable. The car was bumped in the rear bumper once, lightly, just cracking the bumper cover about six to eight inches and was repaired and repainted with Glasurit paint (the MBenz factory paint) by a high-end shop in San Juan Capistrano. A few years later the front bumper took a hit from a piece of a lawnmower flying off a truck and hitting the front end below the radiator. Again fixed by the same shop. The passenger door mirror got sideswiped somewhere along the way and was replaced with one that needs to be manually repositioned rather than electric. No body work, just a big scratch in the door from when the mirror got ripped off. We repainted it twice because the color match was slightly off the first time. Other than the gray bumpers and the passenger door the paint is all original and has been maintained/washed weekly by me and polished bi-annually since new. The car has always been garaged at home and at her work since she took ownership. The paint looks as good today as the day she bought the car. There are no dings or scratches on the car currently. There is a small crack in the drivers side rear tail light, pictured below. THE INTERIOR The interior is also outstanding and is atestament to the MB Texture material for the seating and door panels and trim. The carpeting from that era is fabulous and it is in near mint condition. The interiors from this period are simplyindestructiblein my opinion. There is one little crack in one of the pleats in the driver seat. The headliner is near perfection and not a single crack nor fading in the dash. The wood is in great shape. As a side note, there were sheepskin seat covers on this car from about 40K miles to 240K. The back seat has barely been used. MECHANICAL The top end of the engine was gone through at 161K and transmission was rebuilt at 158K. The engine starts right up with ease and runs smooth, has power and shifts through the gears wonderfully. If you sit in traffic for more than about 30 minutes in extreme heat it will start to warm up, but has never overheated. The Radiator is relatively new. Obviously with nearly 250K miles on it we can’t guarantee it is going to run forever… but it runs fantastic and has great acceleration and pull. The transmission shifts wonderfully. When you do every single service meticulously, these cars will run a very long time. The money was spent and it was maintained to near perfection. It does not appear to use much oil, but we really have not driven it much since she bought an Audi AllRoad in early 2015. I would plan on a quart every 1000-1200 miles worst case. The battery is new as of May 2020. The radio works, the windows work perfectly, the wipers, the cruise control and every single system in this car works like the day it came out of the factory. The AC blows cold. The hydraulic locks have always worked perfectly. Driving these W124’s from this era are truly amazing and have incredibly smooth acceleration and handling characteristics. The ride quality is wonderful and cannot be compared to the later model wagons that were roughly 60% of the price of these vehicles new. These were the last of the hand-built Benzes. They are special. You couldn't wear out this chassis if you tried. At roughly 9500 miles per year since new, this car still has that brand new look and feel to it. Why? Because it was quality built during one of the best eras of Mercedes-Benz manufacture and was owned by a person that knew how to take care of it. UNDERCARRIAGE The undercarriage is immaculate and dry with no signs of any rust anywhere. The exhaust is good, all the bushings and front end bits are in excellent shape, most everything has been replaced and always with nothing but Mercedes-Benz original parts. All the original undercoating and painted parts are as they came from the factory. Brakes are all good.Tires are probably eight years old but still have tread on them (see I told you we didn’t have every receipt). The car has had a very small leak forever and our mechanic Stefan has always tried to source it but just gave up and said “Mercedes leak†(with strong German accent). We always figured when we went through the whole engine we would reseal it. When we put together the list of work compiled in the receipts we only grabbed the big items. There is a lot more detail in the receipts.
