Description of 1949 Mercury Other |
Are you looking to build a lead sled '49 Mercury? Do you have some skill and some time but don't have the ridiculous budget to get into one of these? This may be the car for you. I can not stress how nice this project is, and how far along it is. Yes, it's a long description but I believe in being honest and thorough as to not waste your time or mine. Read it all to find out what an awesome project car this is. First, the bad, yes it was born a 4 door. I have converted a couple of these into coupes and you would never know, plus let's face it if you're planning on chopping this car that's WAY more work than finishing the coupe conversion here. The way it was being done was utilizing complete coupe quarters and quarter windows, around and above the rain gutter (see photo of passenger side clamped in place). The reason for that was instead of swapping the roof which is MINT, and having to fix a rotted header panel, package tray, and floor bracing etc, it was easier to just splice these in and deal with clean metal all around. The doors are stretched sedan doors, they are OK at best. One is fine, the other either needs some work OR I have sourced some affordable, local to the east coast coupe doors. (Included is a second, complete set of 4 door doors in very nice shape) Now onto the good, which this car has a TON of. First, the previous owner prior who was a custom car builder by trade, upgraded this chassis to power steering, 4 way coils, power disc brakes, etc. The ENTIRE chassis and brake system is new, every line, hose, shock, bushing, nut and bolt. The brakes are all new, plumbled and bled already. The steering column is mated to the original Mercury column so you don't have a dorky 80s tilt column in it. (The steering feels amazingly responsive compared to the stock Mercury box) The drivetrain is a small block Chevy mated to a 2004R automatic overdrive transmission. I have a NEW IN THE BOX Lokar style shifter for this trans. The aluminum radiator is brand new and specifically made for this. The gas tank is a first gen Mustang tank, and also brand new with new sender. Literally everything with this car is new. The car sits on radial whitewalls with Olds hubcaps. The floors are 100% solid. What wasn't was patched, but this was a very solid car to start. The inner and outer rockers were replaced with (I believe) Mercuryland parts. This car comes with TONS of parts that I cant get pictures of in my tiny garage, I will try and list them all here. First, full Thunderbird interior, complete with all the trim/stainless for the rear seat. Good driver quality bumpers and irons, 54 Ford front fender flares, 2 door side stainless trim, Painless wiring fuseblock, 55 Chrysler grill, 51 skirts, interior window trim, etc. The dash is here, in good shape and complete, and also has vintage SW guages I was transplanting into the dash for the ability to actually know what's happening under the hood lol. IF you have been in the market for a Mercury project, take it from someone who has owned over 40 of these cars, why mess around all winter replacing wasted floors/inner rockers/bodybraces, and still have to do all the suspension and chassis upgrades (not to mention probably have no motor and trans)....this car is a score and a half. Back up to my garage, I will help you load and load your pickup bed with all the extra parts. Spend your free time on this and be cruising by spring. The car is located in Belmar, NJ 07719. Any questions or to set up a time to check it out, call Chris at nine oh ate ate ate fore seven one too zero. Sorry to type it that way but this place is a hotbed for scammers. |
