Ford Motor Company introduced the first postwar Mercury in 1949. The new car was drastically different in appearance than its predecessor with the Mercury line adapting "ponton" styling. The Mercury was powered by the now legendary flathead V8, displacing 255 cubic inches that was good for 110 horsepower and kept the Mercury running along the sides Detroit's of newly designed V8's. Under the leadership of General Manager Benson Ford the Mercury Division saw tremendous growth with 1950 sales topping both Dodge and Studebaker. Several body styles were available, including a station wagon and four door sedans. The 1949-51 Mercury remains popular with customizers and collectors today. Most examples have been subjected to incredible modifications that rarely resemble their factory appearance. Mercury's that still remain in original specification are few and far between and when they happen to appear on the market they are highly sought-after by collectors.
