Description of 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7

1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible in Competition Yellow, 351 Cleveland V8, 3 Speed Auto Transmission, 64,203 original miles.
This classic Cougar has been in indoor storage for roughly 25 years but now its time to sell. The Cougar came from the factory with the following options:
- Select-Shift automatic transmission
- Traction-Lok rear differential
- Tilt Steering wheel
- Power Steering
- 4-way power drivers seat
- Power front disk brakes
- Wisper-Aire air conditioner
- AM/FM cassette stereo
- Sports console with clock
- Interval windshield wipers
- Appearance protection group
- Power windows
- Competition handling package
The car has had the following replaced to bring it back into good running and driving condition:
- Battery
- Tires
- OEM equivalent white convertible top with glass window
- Fuel sender, pump, and filter
- Spark plugs, wires, and distributor
- Drive belts and idler pulley
- All fluids and filters (coolant, engine oil and filter, power steering, transmission oil and filter, brake fluid, gear oil, convertible top hydraulic fluid)
- Front brake pads, rear shoes, rear wheel cylinders, and rear drum springs and adjusters
- Shocks front and rear
- Suspension bushings (sway bar, sway bar end link, front strut rod)
- Coolant hoses
- Drivers side power window switch
This Cougar is nearly 50 years old and was a daily driver up until the early '90s, since then it has been in storage with a brief stint of being driven around the year 2000. The Cougar is in good overall condition, however you can expect the normal wear and tare of a nearly 50 year old daily driver. With that said, here is an honest list of the issues I have come across getting this car road worthy:
- I assume drivers rear quarter panel has been repaired some time in the past. There is no pin striping on that panel like there should be along with some over spray on the reflector. The lower body line isn't perfect with a slight wave to it, but it is not something that stands out.
- The convertible top was replaced on June 15, 2020 at a cost of nearly $1900. Possibly due to the damage on the rear quarter panel, the top rubs on the molding when raising. The upholstery shop recommended having a body shop look into having that repaired before it rubs a hole in the new top.
- The paint has patches that are lighter in color (mainly on the hood and passenger fender)
- AC needs to be converted to run modern 134a refrigerant.
- The engine runs rough when cold.
- The interior is in good condition with typical wear to the drivers seat, passenger seats look nearly new. Armrests on the doors are cracked on both sides
- Interior clock does not work
- Drivers speaker grill and window switch bezel both have a broken tab on the back and will not stay in place.
- AM/FM Cassette stereo works but the passenger door speaker does not.
- Turn signals currently do not work, replacement parts are included.
