Description of 1971 Mercury Cougar GT

Up for auction is one very rare cat. This 1971 J-Code 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air Automatic "GT" Coupe is one of only 20 built and the only one produced with the Dark Green on Dark Green color combination. This car has remained in the one owner's possession until his recent passing with only 57k original miles on it. Options include 429 Cobra Jet engine, Ram Air with functional hood scoop, Heavy Duty C6 Automatic Trans (special unit with additional clutch plates, cast iron tail-shaft and “R” servo), competition suspension: larger front sway bar, rear sway bar, heavy duty shocks and springs (staggered in the rear), 31 spline 3:25 Traction Loc 9" rear axle, 27″ heavy duty radiator, 720CFM Rochester/QuadraJet carb., Convenience Group, black vinyl top, power steering, power disc brakes, heavy duty battery, dual exhaust, Air Conditioning, Tinted Glass, GT appearance group, Appearance Protection Group, AM-8Track stereo (a $200 option at the time) and F70-14 tires on Rallye Wheels. With the GT package you received color-keyed functional hood scoop, short console, Bright Wheel Trim Rings in addition to deluxe hub caps, dual color-keyed Racing Mirrors, instrument panel finish and steering column all black, deluxe 3-spoke rim-blow, black steering wheel and tachometer. All of these items remain with the car.
According to the 429 Cobra Jet Registry, this car is the only one of the 20 1971 GT J-code Auto Coupes known to exist. This car is rarer still because it retains its complete and original driveline including engine, C6 R-servo trans, Trac Loc rear axle, carb, radiator, ram air air-cleaner, distributor, fan shroud and heavy duty suspension. Engine has never been out of the car and nothing has been removed or changed other than normal wear items.
This Cougar also has all of its original body panels, although rust is an issue on many of these parts. Floors and rockers are still pretty solid (see photos) with the passenger front needing a section and trunk pan repair. Anticipate general rust repair in multiple areas. All of the rails are solid and clean. The car has been in carport storage for about 25 years and I have not tried to start it. Roof is rusted through and will need replacing as will the hood. (a replacement roof assembly is included in the auction) The rest of the sheetmetal could be repaired, but I personally think it would be easier to replace all of the bolt on metal (since donor cars are easy to find reasonably cheap) as well as the quarters. It will obviously need a complete mechanical, interior and body restoration, however, this is a valuable car when completed. The interior is complete, including the original high back bucket seats, tach dash, consolette, "Cougar" AM-8Track and original steering wheel. However the interior will need a full renovation.
Additional parts included with the auction is a set of front grilles, taillights, a full in-dash factory A/C system, a roof from a donor car, two (2) of the original GT Rallye wheels with caps, trim and other miscellaneous parts. Car rolls and steers easily and tires stay inflated. Body has been wiped down with "Poppy's Patina Clear" to show the body and color better. The rusted top has a light coating of bedliner over it to try and keep it water tight. Free and clear Florida open title. The title matches the door tag, which matches the dash tag, which matches the buck tag. The framed $380 Deluxe Marti-Report showing it is a 1-of-1 based on the color combination is included with the sale. Bidding will start at $7,500 WITH NO RESERVE, which is what I think is a very reasonable valuation of just the driveline. I've been offered $2,500 just for the air cleaner assembly (they are unique to J-code Cougars). Car is located in the Clearwater Florida area. Please ask ALL questions before bidding. You are bidding to buy, not to look, so please be a serious buyer and lets not waste anybody's time. Thank you for looking.
I do not sell many cars on ebay. However, the last car I sold in 2018 was a red 1968.5 Cougar 428 CJ 4spd car in similar condition that sold for over $26,000. It is on Barn Finds and you can see it is photographed in the same garage.
