Description of 1950 Mercury Coupe |
Purchased fromArizona after the former owner commissioned a $125k, 16-year build in variousshops in Minnesota where it was chopped 4", lowered front and rear, nosed, decked, and headlights frenched with bumpers molded to the body. Firewallwas replaced, and electrical components are hidden in the frame. CustomColorado billet wheels were machined to resemble 1959 Cadillac Sombrero hubcapswith trick rear fender skirts that remove with the touch of a button. The car's premierefeature is the custom tilt hood, smoothly welded into one unit that slides andtilts forward a full 90 degrees to expose the engine compartment. The frame andsuspension are original, with Fatman Fabrications front components for thedropped spindles. Other items include a Lecarra steering wheel(small cracks in the hub), Lokar shifter, cruise control,, A/C, Autoloc doorpoppers, and a Dakota digital dash. Vintage Air provides HVAC. When I bought thecar in 2012, we felt that the powertrain simply did not do justice to the restof the build and replaced it with a 330HP crate 347 Ford stroker motor and AODtransmission with stainless exhaust and Magnaflo mufflers to go with theexisting Ford 9" rear. We also improved the lighting and added theearly Corvette grill, replacing the almost invisible turn signals with LEDcombination turn signals/running lights. We also laser cut vent holes insome interior hood sections to increase cooling and replaced the smaller customgas tank with a larger 26 gallon unit. Added custom radiator with a 2800cfm electric fan and replaced various engine accessories with billetcomponents. A powered advance was added to the hood mechanism for ease ofoperation (pushes it forward before manual lifting aided by gas struts).ARP bolts were used whenever new ones were needed. Our actions addedanother $30k to the cost of the build, with all receipts for work done under myownership. Current issues are limited to minor cracking in thesteering wheel, and the cruise control, which works but seems to have beenwired backwards. That said, this car is ready to go anywhere! The car can be seen in our warehouse inAngola, Indiana. |
