Description of 1950 MG T-Series |
OFFERING Here we have a 1950 TD 3961 with its original XPAG/TD 4041 engine. It is numbers matching although much of the frame number on the LH dumb iron is covered by the fender. This is a very unusual TD in the fact that it is an EXR Export Right Hand Drive model which was allegedly shipped to New Zealand as its first destination. Eventually the car was sold in California, then Iowa and finally Wisconsin. Because it spent the vast majority of its life in favorable climates, the car is totally rot/rust free. BODY All sheet metal and the ash framework for the tub are in very good condition with no rot or rust through. The car has been repainted at least once and the current black is peeling and cracking in some areas (see photos) probably because the sheet metal was improperly cleaned before the paint was applied. As can be seen in the photos, the lower rear quarters are rock solid and the rocker panel butt joints are clearly evident on both sides indicating that no body work has ever been necessary in these critical areas. Although the paint is suitable for a driver, the condition of the car merits a respray! The undercarriage is very clean with none of the typical deterioration of the wood structure and rotting of the frame. Additional photos of the underside can be provided. ENGINE The original XPAG engine starts up easily and has oil pressure around 50 psi at 4000 rpm and 30 psi at idle. The core plugs have been replaced recently as one was leaking. No other engine work seems necessary at this point although there is ahigh pitchedwhistling noise which is believed to be a vacuum leak in the manifold gasket. The exhaust system is relatively new with a stainless steel muffler and tail pipe. DRIVETRAIN The clutch engages smoothly and the transmission shifts properly. Brakes and steering both function normally and as expected for a car 68 years old. INTERIOR The interior is complete other than carpets, but should be redone. I will include an NOS Moss or AMCO vinyl interior kit (seat coveringsand panels)with the sale of the car.All instruments (tach, speedo, ammeter, oil pressure, water temperature)work and are mounted on a wooden dash. The steering wheel is a nice period dished type believed to be a Moto Lita. CHROME Bumpers are in excellent condition and appear to be fairly new. Radiator shell is in good condition with a few minor dents and presentable chrome. WHEELS The car is fitted with 72 spoke wheels in good condition with nearly new knockoffs. Tires are 185R15 and have good tread but should probably be replaced as they are at least 10 years old. If the buyer would prefer 48 or 60 spoke wheels, I will fit them at no charge. If the buyer would preferstock wheels, I will convert the car back to original 15 inch disc wheels with proper hub caps at no charge. MISCELLANEOUS Although not shown, there is a set of black side curtains that go with the car. Condition is similar to the top....useable, but definitely not pristine. There is a clear, openWisconsin title in my name. Actual mileage is unknown, so I have listed 99,999 to meet eBay requirements. This numbers matching, early TD would make an excellent driver as is or could be an excellent basis for a concours restoration. INSPECTION/SHIPPING I encourage inspection prior to bidding. The car can be viewed at any time in Burlington, Wisconsin. It is also available for pick up there. I will assist the buyer in loading the car and will work with your transporter/export agent if the car is to be exported. I may be able to deliver the car in the Midwest, Ohio, Pennsylvaniaor New York if the buyer is not in a hurry. Call Ed at 847-830-7193 for more details. |
