Description of 1977 MG MGB |
A 1977 MGB red convertible with black interior. recently installed new black top and odometer showing a little over 62. 00 miles. The motor is what appears to be the original 4 cylinder motor and it has what we believe is the original drive train behind the motor. The motor was supposed to have been rebuilt a couple of years ago. but we had problems getting it to run. and it knocks for several seconds when first started up. after which the knock goes away. The original electronic ignition was replaced with a points distributor several years ago. as is apparently a common change with these cars. But the ignition changeover was accompanied by several wiring changes which resulted in some very challenging-to-trace wiring issues. Some things are working properly. while others are not. The lights tend to be intermittent. the horn is not working. the radio is not working. and several other electrical issues need attention. the best answer to these issues is probably the replacement of the entire wiring harness. As you can see in the photos. the top looks pretty nice. the glass is good. and there are several parts that are in good condition. On the other hand. there is a lot of rust: the floors need replacement or patching. there are rust issues on the rocker panels. doors. fenders. inner fenders and on the underside and frame rails. The seat covers are pretty torn up. but the seat frames are OK. With the needed electrical repairs. you could make a driver of this little car pretty easily. and with a lot of added attention. you could make a nice restoration out of it. On the other hand. the car could be used as a donor for your existing restoration project. there are several parts that can be used. The car has all new rear brakes and brand new front brake pads. as well as new ignition wiring and points. I have a clear New york title from the owner. who is a friend of mine for whom I have been trying to do some repair work on the car. on and off. for the past few months. At this point. we have agreed that it just isn't worth it to him to put any more money into the car. The car is located in Middleburgh. New York. about 40 miles west of Albany. NY. I've taken the car for a couple of short rides when it has been running well. and it's fun to drive. So. if you're interested in a challenging project car that doesn't take up a lot of garage space. or if you're looking for a reasonably priced donor car to provide parts for your continuing MGB restoration project. here's a good one for you!
