Description of 1961 Mini Classic Mini

1961 Classic Mini Cooper Vintage Racer. I have owned this car since March of 2011. I acquired it from a racer in Puyallup Washington who campaigned the car in SOVREN races (Society of Vintage Racing ENthusiasts) during the 2002-4 seasons. SOVREN sponsors vintage races in the Pacific NW. The SOVREN tech inspection stickers remain on the roll cage. The car was stored inside with periodic engine warm-ups until I acquired it. My intent was to use it for the occasional track day/autocross and for buzzing around the backroads of Oregon where I live. The mileage on the car is unknown to me as it has not had an operative odometer installed. The VIN number plate indicates “A-A2S7L-44401. ” I also have a chassis plate that indicates “F053?97. ” Neither ID plate is currently installed as I removed them both prior to doing some painting and having the floor panel replaced. They both come with the car. Since owning the car. I focused on improving the suspension while generally tidying up the car and making it minimally street legal. I have had no reason to tear down the engine. as it runs very strong. Speaking of the engine. it was built by Portland OR Mini guru Ward Barbor. I have spoken with Ward regarding the engine internals and he said: “1275+ with steel crank. Carrillo rods. Wiseco pistons. race cam. etc. ” Significant head work has been done including the addition of roller rockers. The engine has a SS adjustable oil pressure valve. remote oil filter and oil cooler. all connected with Aeroquip SS lines. Ignition is via a Crane Fireball electronic module. A ceramic powder coated header exhausts gases via a new pipe to a Supertrap muffler (still a bit loud though). The fuel system includes dual 1-1/2” SU carburetors with custom velocity stacks. a rear mounted Facet fuel pump. fuel filter and a 5 gallon FuelSafe fuel cell. Braided SS Aeroquip fuels lines bring the fuel to the firewall bulkhead and new blue hoses connect to the SU’s. Because of the high compression. I run a mixture of 50% race gas (110 octane) and 50% premium pump gas. The transmission has straight cut gears (strong but whiny) with synchromesh on gears 2. 3 & 4. I do not know the gear ratios (seem close ratio to me) or final drive ratio (~50 mph in fourth at 3100 rpm). The differential is a limited slip. Shifting is via a KAD short shifter. Brakes are disks front and drums rear (1” offset”) with SS lines and proportioning valve in the cockpit. No power boost. but the car stops well albeit with a strong foot. A charged and functional Safecraft fire extinguisher system is in place with aluminum piping and nozzles in the trunk. passenger compartment. and engine compartment (2). Actuator pulls are on the dash and on the outside firewall next to the electrical cutoff switch. The rear suspension has red coils with ride height adjustment. Spax adjustable shock absorbers. and KAD camber castor adjuster brackets. An adjustable sway bar is also mounted with spherical rod ends. The front suspensions mount to a newly powder coated subframe and includes: Spax adjustable shock absorbers. adjustable sway bar with spherical rod ends. red coils with ride height adjustment. caster adjustable front leading arms and camber adjustable lower control arms. A complete alignment to my specs was done in February. Ride height is currently set at about 4”. The interior (RIGHT hand drive) has a Sparco EVO2 racing seat (very comfortable). 6 point Simpson harness. full bolt-in roll cage by Safety Devices and a drivers window net (not currently installed) as well as a Clubman style passenger seat. lap belt and the original rear seat back and bottom (both easily removed). Dash board includes a new multifunction tachometer and mechanical oil pressure. oil temperature and water temperature gauges. The multi function tachometer/odometer has the capability to output: oil pressure and water temperature via electronic sensors (not installed but included with parts). a shift light. performance history. etc. To make the car street legal (in Oregon). I re-installed and rewired the headlights and turn signals. horn and wiper blades and expanded the fuse box. Much of the car was rewired as I wanted to clean it up as I went along. The car has no heater or door windows though both are included with the “spares”. Little interior other than the head liner and door panels remains - so the cockpit is a bit loud. The body has no rust that I know of. I had the drivers side floor pan replaced due to a small rusted area directly below the drivers seat. Close inspection of the doors sills. etc. shows that the remainder of the car is solid. The paint is as I got the car. The checkerboard top was expertly done (paint) and is in excellent condition. The rest of the paint is in good condition albeit with some chips - no doubt from racing closeness. The rear trunk lid is fiberglass and the front sheet metal is welded as a “tilt unit”. hinged at the front bottom (see pictures). Because the front-end wiring includes a trailer type plug-in coupling. the entire unit may be easily disconnected and set aside for total access to the engine and suspension. This configuration was accepted by the SOVREN tech inspectors. I also have a complete fiberglass front end shell. painted black. that can be included depending upon sale price. It mounts via Dzus fasteners. Wheels are 5” x 10” Minilites (black center. polished rim) and 165/70-10 Hoosier TD tires (not DOT legal). The tires will need replacing if any serious track use is planned. No spare wheels or tires are included or available. I have a collection of spare parts including the glass front end. the door windows. rubber suspension cones. stock suspension arms. vintage Smiths tachometer. original speedometer. CV joints. some ball joints. two sets of K&N air cleaners. dash switches. AN hose fittings. heater. a second Clubman style seat and more. As with the extra front-end shell these parts can be included depending upon sale price. The title is clear and in my name. The Oregon license was just renewed and is good through March 2017. The car runs very well as I mentioned above and it handles like a go-cart as you would expect. The engine starts easily and likes to rev. Throttle response is very fast. Driving it in traffic is fine. no overheating issues or any thing else but it shines at higher RPMs and is a blast. and at home. on the country twisties.
