Description of 1929 Nash Standard Six Series 425 Coupe |
OVERVIEW: This is a restored to original 1929 Nash Series 425 Standard Six 2 Passenger Coupe in roadworthy condition. These cars rode on a 112" wheelbase, eighed in at 2,500 lbs., nd were powered by a 50 horse, 84 ci., -head inline 6-cylinder engine. This was also the first year that Nash used chrome brightwork in place of nickel. This car carries with it its day one history, acked by its original bill of sale and very first registration document. It was purchased new on August 19th, 929 from Madsen Motor Co. in Spirit Lake, ickinson County, owa by Mr. J. Lyle Osborne of Wrentham, lberta for the sum of $800. Mr. Osborne brought the car into Canada and registered it on September 6, 929, here it has remained in the dry western climate of southern Alberta to this day. It has also remained in the same family all these years. The present owner is the son of Mr. Osborne's cousin. He acquired the solid, ust free, ut tired looking car from Mr. Osborne in the late 1980's, fter it spent many years barn stored. It carries serial # R196437, nd its original engine # 196363. The odometer showed 65,433 original miles when these present day pictures were taken, ay 23rd, 015. The car was the subject of a complete body-off restoration, erformed by Pride & Joy Auto Restorations of Lethbridge, lberta. The engine machine shop work and rebuild was also professionally done by Silver Automotive Ltd., lso of Lethbridge. This is a solid, oadworthy and reliable car. It has proven its reliability over the last 20 years by having been on many local outings and tours. It has won recognition at numerous showings around southern Alberta. Among these are: Best Antique in 1995, 000, nd 2002. Best Restored, nd a Best Pre-1940 1st in 1997. And most notably, st Place - Class C, 929-34 at the 2006 Nash Grand National Meet in Kalispell, ontana. While it is not a flawless high end trailer queen, t remains a very respectable and presentable antique, eady to go further down the road and be appreciated and enjoyed by its next owner. DRIVETRAIN: The original rebuilt engine starts easily, uns strong, nd sounds good. Reliability and longevity can be expected from these Nash engines as they were equipped with 7 main bearings and solid valve lifters. The engine compartment is quite clean and tidy. The engine color is believed to be correct. The original vacuum tank has been disconnected A 6 volt electric fuel pump, ounted underneath on the chassis, s being used full time for reliability and easy starting after periods of storage. A pressure regulator and shut-off valve is located ahead of the Marvel updraft carburetor. All other components on and around the engine appear to be correct originals and operate as required, aving been serviced or rebuilt as required to keep the car in good roadworthy condition. The radiator was re-cored and is in good condition. The fan belt and hoses appear in good condition. Modern hose clamps are evident. Other minor deviations from original are the modern spark plug wires, nd the wiring harness with modern plastic loom. The original 3 speed standard transmission was fully serviced. The rear axle is original, nd has a ratio of 4.7:1. It was also fully serviced and a new pinion seal installed. It gives no problems, ther than the usual minor oil drip hanging from it. CHASSIS: The chassis is all original and restored as was required, howing only the road dirt and grime of its miles. The frame was soda blasted clean, rimed and painted, t is very solid and straight. Leaf spring suspension is original and shows no negative arch, he car maintains a proper looking stance. The car is equipped knee action shock absorbers. The rebounder strap on the left rear shock has pulled out of its retainer and will need to be re-secured. Front end steering components were replaced as required. The complete 4-wheel mechanical brake system was rebuilt. Front brakes are internal expanding and the rears are external contracting. The exhaust system is in good order. The gas tank was flushed and internally coated for corrosion protection. The tires are a matched set of 5 Firestone black wall, ias ply, .75/5.00 x 20's. They are in excellent condition, ith very few miles. They are mounted on original rims. The wood spoke wheels are beautiful. As with all other wood on the car, hey were very solid and required only to be sanded and a fresh coat of clear applied. They are sporting correct original Nash hubcaps in very nice condition. BODY & PAINT: An entire life in the dry climate of southern Alberta ensured this was a very rust free and solid body and wood frame work prior to restoration. The wood structure was very solid with good integrity throughout, nd as such, o part of it needed replacing or reconstruction. The wood remains solid today, nd the doors appear to fit well with no droop or looseness on the hinges. It carried original blue paint prior being stripped to bare metal. Minimal bodywork was required, rimarily just straightening a few minor dents. Quality of the body work is excellent, nd all sheet metal and body panels are very straight with good panel alignment and gaps. The door bottoms were clean and rust free, s were the bottoms of the cowl and quarter panels, nd trunk lid. Given the 20 years that have passed since body and paint work was done, believe there are no hidden surprises with this car. The car was repainted green as preferred by the owner, nd pin striped using modern tape. The paint is a solid non-metallic color, nd the paint is either an acrylic enamel or single stage urethane. This provides for an authentic look and patina as opposed to the high gloss and depth of modern base/coat clear/coat paints. The prep work, verall finish and shine of the paint job is very good, nd it is quite smooth, s evidenced by the nice crisp reflections you can see in some of the pics.. There are few minor chips here and there from its use, ost of the little spots you may see in the pics are mostly just dust and such showing up with the flash of the camera. New top material was installed and is nicely trimmed out, nd new wood running boards were made, ach one sporting a nice Nash logoed step plate. ELECTRICAL: The car retains its original 6-volt electrical system. The car was re-wired using modern plastic coated wire and terminals, ostly housed in modern plastic loom. Cloth loom was used for the wiring to the head lamps. The attractive gauges are in outstanding original condition, ery nice. All are in working order except for the fuel gauge. A modern temperature gauge has been added under dash to the left of the steering column as insurance. All driving lights and add-on turn signals are in working order. The car sports nice large cowl lights. The head lamps are original, ut the two lenses are mismatched. One is a Spreadlight, he other a Parabeam. The tail lights are reproductions with glass 'STOP' lenses. The windshield wiper is manual operation only. The horn is in working order. INTERIOR: The interior upholstery is nicely done and still in good condition, ppropriate for the car and comfortable. The seats, oor and side panels, nd headliner are done in a matching mohair type of material. New carpeting and windlace also, nd there is a rear window blind. A very nice feature is the original wood graining on the dash and window garnish moldings. Although not perfect, t is in good original condition and quite attractive. It contains 2 different colors and grains, nhanced with hand painted pin striping. Door garnish moldings are painted black. The steering wheel is also in original condition, as numerous cracks but remains useable and is not crumbling apart as so many do. Some minor wear on the pedals. All interior handles and cranks are unrestored originals. The right door has a mismatched interior door handle and is missing an escutcheon. New glass on the car is clear and in good condition. New window channels. The trunk area was painted green and is basically dusty from its travels. There is a carpet for it which matches the interior carpet. It was removed to show the trunk pan, nd is not shown. A little bit of surface rust is visible at the rear of the pan, ut there is no metal rust out or wood rot evident anywhere. The trunk lid wood structure is also very solid. BRIGHTWORK: This was the first year that Nash used chrome bright work on their cars. Most of the chrome on the car was redone at time of restoration and it remains in excellent condition, nd is evident that it was quality work done to a high standard. Re-chromed items include both front and rear bumpers, he rad shell and cap, ead lamps, owl molding and lamps, nd hood handles. The cowl lamps contain amber lenses and are used as turn signals. Rear turn signals are thru the reproduction tail lamps. The rad shell sports a nice Nash emblem in good condition, nd no crank hole cover. There is about a ½" hole in the bottom chrome skirt just to the left of the crank hole. This skirt is separate from the rad shell and so could be removed for repair if desired. Both outer door handles are original unrestored. The trunk latch is missing, ut there is a key for the lock on the rear mounted spare. The hubcaps are correct originals in super nice original condition. They can be removed and installed by hand, ut the 2 indentations are there to accommodate a special wrench, hich the owner does not have. It would be simple enough to make one. SUMMARY: The original documents will be included with the car, long with a reproduction Owner's Manual, arts Book. There are also some spare parts which include a luggage rack with brackets, hot water heater, visor, arburetor, rease gun, nd miscellaneous. As a nice older restoration, t has proven itself reliable throughout its life and remains a very presentable and useable, un car. The little things it needs or that could be improved on can be done over time, hile having fun with it. No hidden secrets or horrors with this car.
