Here’s an amazing survivor 66 Oldsmobile Toronado. I bought this car a year ago from an older local gentleman. He acquired it from an affluent doctor, who may have been the original owner. I have some records. It was tucked away in his garage for an extended period. I immediatelyreplaced all the fluids, serviced all the brakes. I stripped (sandblasted) and epoxy coated all 5 wheels and installed 5 new tires. While I was doing the brakes, I replaced the rear wheel bearings & sealsand rebuilt the RF axle. I replaced both rear view mirrors with correct replacements. I also replaced the rear window cowl vent drains with correct replacement parts. I restored the entire dash cluster to hi-level concour standards (see pics. I’ve been working on high-end cars for 40 years and have restored many as a profession – now it’s a hobby). I’ve been enjoying the car all summer and it’s a thrill to drive. The underside is super-solid. Someone undercoated it a long time ago and it saved the floors and everything else. Sadly, I was too late on the cowl drains and the rear quarter panels behind the rear wheel well arches are rusty. I can’t find any other significant rust other than very minor spots along the stainless trim. The paint is aged lacquer. It appears to have been repainted in the original color a long time ago. Very solid car and an excellent restoration candidate-which is why I bought it. I’ve got too many projects and limited space, so I’m offering this one in the hopes someone will give it the care it deserves. All gauges work- even the clock keeps excellent time over a period of months. Engine starts right up, idles like silk and pulls like a train. Transmission shifts smoothly with no slippage. All interior and exteriorlights work. I rebuilt the headlight vacuum actuators. Wipers work. Horn doesn’t (I haven’t had a chance to look) nor does the cigarette lighter. It needs paint, chrome, seat covers and carpets to be near-perfect. Carpets are in good shape, just soiled.

A sweet ride. Gets lots of attention.

Over the summer I brought it to Carlisle for theGM Nationals and the 50th anniversary of the Toronado. David North - career GM Chief Designer under Bill Mitchell was giving seminars. He signed the dash, my owner’s manual and an originalbrochure - and I have photos of him doing it. They go with the car. Mr. North is a very sweet and knowledgeable man, who shared many intimate details about the design of this ground-breaking milestone of an autombile. He is a historically significamt figure American automotive design history.
