Why drive around in a 442 with a column shift, automatic floor shifter, or eventhe cool dual gate shifter when you can have a factory 4-speed 442?? Remember, the first four in 442 stands for 4-speed!!! This is an extremely rare 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with the real deal 4-speed.Every true Olds guy knows that1970 is the most highly sought after of all the years in the 442 line. The majority of those same guyswill tend to agree that 1970 is the most expensive year to own in the pinnacle of the muscle car era.Any 1970 with a factory 4-speed is also the year that usually brings in the most dollarswhen a muscle car is restored to high end standardswhen itrollsovera liveauction block. I will explain everything I know about this real 1970442 4-speed car, so the lucky bidder who wins thisrare gemcan decide exactly what they would like to spendprior to placing their bid. This engine does have the proper 396021 F casting numbers and the numbers matching block that was completely re-built.
I made this purchase in a small town in Midwestern Wisconsin. As Iarrived atthe upscale home of the owner whohad this true 442 4-speedframe-off restoredI knew in an instant how much his family and friendstreasured his pride and joy. This 442 was sitting in a finished 3-car garage with a number of couches and tables around the main attraction. A true 1970 Oldsmobile 442 4-speed! The walls were garnished in vintage Oldsmobile memorabilia including this classic being parked on 442 Drive! I knew right away that these owners took pride in their cherished classic. This 442 was frame off restored a little over a decade ago and then pampered and driven very sparingly to car shows and only on very nice sun shiny summer days. I received a large red folder that includes all the receipts from all the work that was performed on this numbers matching 1970 442 that will all be included to the fortunate winner of this rare beauty. The proof is in the paperwork! A great deal of time, money, and effort went into making this classic muscle car into what it is.
The numbers matching engine that came with this 442 when it rolled out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1970 was completely re-built. This Big Block 455 hasthe correctE-heads for the 1970 442. All 442 guys know how much having the numbers matching parts increases the value of these rare classics. The correct numbers matching7040253 carburetor for a 1970 442 with a manual transmission was also rebuilt. The M-21 close ratio Muncie 4-speedtransmissionand the 3.42 12-bolt positive traction rear-end were also pulled completely apart and rebuilt at that time. This Big Block 455 was treated to all new belts and hoses. All of the factory styled hoses clamps were even used. The brand new spark plug wires are Hi-Temp high performance Accel Spiral Core 8MM Super Stock wires.
The professional classic auto appraisal has this 1970 442 listed as a frame-off restored car with the body completely stripped off the frame including all of the trim, chrome, and moldings. This frame has all new body bushings and control arm bushings with new stabilizer links. The front disc brakes and the rear drum brakes have been completely redone with new hardware and even new lug nut studs. The emergency brake works great because the entire emergency brake system has all been redone. There are brand new U-joints and the heavy duty drive shaft has been restored. The boxed control armsand front sway bar have new bushings. Brand new front fenders were installed along with new door skins, rear quarter panels, and a new trunk lid. After the body was off the frame the entire frame was sandblasted and painted Satin Black before the reinstallation of the exorbitant amount of new parts. The front floor pans were professionally replaced. The body was meticulously primed, hand sanded, and the paint work was done in base coat clear coat. All the fuel lines and brake lines were replaced. All new shocks and springs were installed. The entire suspension, steering, and exhaust were all replaced or rebuilt. The dual exhaust is completely new from the front to the back of the cool cut-out rear bumper with dual flowmasters that sound awesome out the new chrome trumpet exhaust tips. Everything on this 442 was painted and detailed to a high level before reinstallation. There was a brand new professionally installed black vinyl top. There are all newbody weather strips, window felts, new rubber door gaskets, new roof rail rubber gaskets, new trunk gasket, and mostly all the trim were replaced. All the chrome not needing replacement were high speed polished. All of the 442 emblems and W-30 emblems are brand new. The windshield is also new and the original windshield wiper pump was rebuilt. There is a new washer fluid container. Both the front and rear bumpers were freshly triple plated with new chrome. These bumpers are the originals not aftermarket. The front bumper even has a new license plate bracket. Those were always long gone on these cars and most restorers don't bother to put one back on.
The entire interior was completely removed and replaced with a brand new correct 1970 interior kit including new seat covers with all new padding. There are new chrome door handles and door locks. The door key does match the ignition keys. This 442 is steered with the cool sport wheel. There are new interior door panels and rear side back panels, and all four new window cranks withnew black carpeting including a new headliner. There arebrand new sun visors and thefront vented kick panels are brand new and open up well to let fresh air in. The bucket seats and the rear seats all have new padding and the factory correct patterns that are correct for the 1970 442 hardtop. Even the plastic bucket seat backs are brand new with new chrome push buttons and full chrome piping that surrounds the seat backs and lower plastic portions. All three pairs of seat belts are in the rear, and the double seat belts are in the front for each bucket seat. One is for the lap belt and the other is for the shoulder belt. They really liked to strap you in back in the day to make sure no one was flying around with the brute power of a 442. Especially with a 4-speed! The original dash board is unblemished. This dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereo's and even the original AM radio still works well with a new front speaker.
All four head lights and bright lights are brand new Sylvania Halogen lamps, so visibility at night is very good. This442 sits on a set of fourB.F. Goodrich Radial T/A 235/70SR14"raised white lettered steel belted radial tires withgood tread mounted on 14 inch Super Stock II wheels painted Argent Silver which is correct for 1970. With the all new suspension andall new body bushings with these size Radial T/A's this 442 sits up just right. All four wheels have all fourbolt-on center caps, all fourbeauty trim rings, and 20 new chrome lug nuts. The trunk floor is in super nice condition witha restored jack, jack stand, and crow bar. Also included in the trunk is a 14" inch full size Super Stock II spare tire. This442 came from thefactory with manualdisc brakes. Apparently, from what I've been told and seen through researchall true W-30's came with manual brakes.Furthermore, the seventh digit in the vin number is an M, which stipulates that this model was built in Michigan. All of the 1970 W-30 models came out ofLansing Michigan only, but no red fender wells were installed, and there is no way to document this car as a true W-30. Included in the glove box is a 1970Oldsmobile original owner's manual.
I have been a judge at the Oldsmobile Nationals the past several years and believe this car would score very well. The majority of the numbers on this 47 year old classic are correct to the car, but it was switched over to electronic ignition for easy start up every time you turn the key. I personally own a 1970 442 Twi-light Blue W-30 convertible that has won first place at Olds Nats. I would not classify this car as being as highly restored as my convertible, but until anyone sees firsthandwhat it takes to see what goes into a frame-off restored car, they have no idea about the time, money, and the immense effort it takes to bring a car up to this level. I am not selling this car as a trailer queen, but a car that can actually be driven and enjoyed and should bring many high quality memories to the new owner. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently hasa genuine1970 Oldsmobile442 with a 4-speed listed at $84,125 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition value listed at $56,500 which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
They have the lowest condition value at $36,750being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration.
The numbers don't lie! This 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with the numbers matchingBig Block 455 and being anoriginal 4-Speedcar is an extremelyvaluable classic muscle car that I would consider above average of what the Nada Classic Car Guide considers average.
