1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday Scenicoupe Documented history Very original car Show quality example Up for bids is this very special '59 Olds. This car was bought new in Reno Nevada and has had 3 owners since new. The car moved to Idaho with its 2nd owner in 1988 and changed ownership in 2012 after a long courtship with another Idaho resident. Extremely solid. original and totally rust free. the car is one of those unique survivors that seem to be getting harder to find as time goes by. I bought the car last year. it was a great runner but had tired paint. About 80% of the paint was original. I debated long and hard about repainting it and enlisted the advice of friends to help make up my mind. Most said to leave it alone. in the end I went against their advice and here's why: The car had all original trim and bumpers that were in fantastic shape. All of the car's glass was original and in fantastic shape. The entire interior was original and in mostly fantastic shape. Basically the car was a diamond in the rough and the only thing missing was fantastic paint. I carefully went about removing all of the trim and can tell you that this car came apart beautifully. No rusted fasteners. no broken bolts or screws. it was the ultimate dry western car and disassembled like clockwork. While it was out for paint I methodically cleaned and hand polished all of the trim. it came out looking like new and once rejoined to the freshly painted body the car began to look like automotive jewelry. Click to enlarge any of the images below. a link to a gallery of all of the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page. Here are some pics of the car from when I bought it last year. and matching pics right before it went in for paint. I didn't want to disturb the original window seals (still in great condition) so I left the glass in. The car's color combination is Bronze Mist over Polaris White. My painter is a wizard at matching color and he nailed it here. The paint finish on this Olds is beautiful - deep. glass smooth and expertly applied. The 2-tone division lines were done perfectly. Panel fit is very good. both doors close precisely with the push of a single finger. All four wheel covers are original and still in nice shape. Tires are new BF Goodrich Silvertowns in 9. 00x14 from Coker. they have about 50 miles on them. Neither bumper had ever been off the car. they still wear their original chrome plating with no trace of pitting or tarnishing. just really incredible originals. They show a few very minor dings and scuffs but considering their age I'll give them a pass. All of the car's anodized trim still looks terrific. The car has all four T3 headlights. The grill is straight and true with no damage. the OLDSMOBILE letters are in in great condition. All of the car's chrome trim still looks like new. Door handles. fender top spears. tail light surrounds - all beautiful with no pitting. Reproductions of the tail light lenses are not available. these are excellent originals with zero cracks or spidering. amazingly well preserved. All of the glass are tinted E-Z Eye Safety Plate originals. including the windshield. The windshield has one very small chip down low on the driver's side. barely visible in the first photo below. The rear glass has some faint scratches. for some reason only visible when the car is under fluorescent light. I carefully removed all 13 trunk lining pieces and cleaned them. While they were out I photographed the trunk floor to show its originality. One look under the parcel shelf and you can tell that this trunk was never damp. The trunk upholstery and panels are all original. Complete set of original jacking equipment. Notice the perimeter weatherstripping. it's original and still as pliable as Day One. The clips you see on the spare are used to hold the wheel cover on. These wheel covers were designed without a hole for the valve stem. instead the cover pivots out from the clips for access to it. Would love to hear how the design team got this one past GM's bean counters back in the day. Going to bat over the aesthetics of a valve stem hole. The seats in this Olds had dealer installed plastic covers from new. as a result the upholstery is incredibly well preserved. The carpet did need to be replaced. otherwise the interior is a trip back to 1959. The door jambs were left untouched during the repaint. The steering wheel has zero cracks or splits. All of the chrome accents on the dash still look super. The plumbing and wiring for the oil pressure and amp gauges look to be professionally installed. probably by the dealer or at least soon after judging by their design. All switchgear is present and working correctly. Lights. signals. horn. wipers. heater. fan. etc all work as they should. The vacuum actuated fresh air vents work correctly. The car's keys are the originals. still with their knockout plates intact. Floor pedals show very little wear. Super 88s (and 98s) came with a special "Star-Lite" headliner. a kind of textured foam applied to a cardboard backing. Unfortunately it was not very durable and most are now missing entirely in Oldsmobiles from this era. This one is hanging in there but shows some age so I inquired with my upholsterer about replacing it. He's the best in Portland and has years of experience. He remembers seeing these falling apart even back in the 60s. He informed me that replacements are not available. his advice was to not touch it. breathe on it. or even look at it. This car was ordered with the rare "Trans-Portable Radio" option. a removable transistor unit that mounts in the glovebox. It works like new. ready to tune in to the ball game. Here's some pictures of the plastic seat covers and the inner door panel. exposed to light for the first time in 56 years. The paper barrier was carefully reinstalled after the car was painted. and the plastic seat covers were saved in case the new owner wants them. Quick pics when I replaced the carpet - very dry floors with no sign of rust. Door panels. hardware and sills all look very good. All of the car's weatherstripping is original and holding up great. Excellent back seat and side panels. The Tri-Tone speedometer bar works correctly. All of the idiot lights work correctly and the "COLD" indicator does function. This Olds starts easily and runs strongly with good power. The car rides down the road nicely with a good suspension and good braking power. It tracks straight and brakes straight. The car doesn't smoke but does leak some fluid from the transmission. Has a well balanced and nearly silent idle. As you can see the engine bay has not been detailed. the air cleaner has been repainted and the hood pad replaced but otherwise it's pure vintage. right down to the bug screen in front of the radiator. I just couldn't take a rattle can to it. we all know what that looks like. Super solid undercarriage with zero rust issues and no sign of accident damage. just a very nice Western survivor car. Included with the car is the original dealer invoice. window sticker. owner's manual and souvenir (voided) title from the 2nd owner in 1988 showing 107K actual miles at that time. The car now carries a clean and clear Oregon title in my name. Click here for a gallery of all of the enlarged images.
