This is not your average 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible. It is a rare U Code, 455/T400 car. It spent most of its life in Florida and Scottsdale Arizona from 1985 to 2018. If you like Oldsmobiles you know big block 1970-1972 Cutlass & 442 convertibles are rare. They built 2933 442 convertibles in 1970, 1304 in 1971, and 1171 in 1972. They built 693 1970 Supreme SX big block convertibles in 1970, and only 357 in 1971. In 1972 the Olds 442 was no longer a separate series with its own specific VIN sequence to identify 442’s vs. Cutlasses. However in 1972, there were letter codes in the VIN to identify drivetrains (H, J, K, M for 350 cars, U for 455 automatic cars, V for 455 4 speed cars, and X for W-30’s – from J. Siedlik, 2015, Oldsmobile 1964 thru 1972 A Bodies. You can also do an internet search for 1972 Oldsmobile VIN codes and find this information.

Thingsit could use: The engine compartment can use further detailing and the black area at the top and bottom of the dash as well as the convertible frame could use fresh paint.

The paint job that I got the car with was the original Pinehurst Green and it needed love. I had that paint blocked down to mostly primer and went with the nicest color I could imagine on this car. It’s a 1995 Corvette blue.

Since I have owned the car (25 years) I have gone thru the fuel system (new gas tank, sending unit, fuel pump), cooling system (new HD 4 row radiator, AC, Wiper motor, water pump,suspension bushings, thermostat, hoses), and had a professional 30+ year GM certified mechanic rebuild the brakes completely, brand new carburetor, and install a new distributor with Pertronix ignition. I have all these receipts in a binder and . ($29000+ in receipts). I had the motom happy to send pictures at your request. The engine was built from the crank up at a well known shop in Phoenix and added Edelbrock aluminum heads, headers, and manifold (kept original heads and manifold stored) also 2.5 aluminized exhaust

It runs great and has a great rumble. Nice but not to loud for my Wife. All lights, wipers, and turn signals work. Power windows and power top work great, factory AC works with proper R12 gas.

The body and chassis on this car are very clean, and the frame was POWDER coated in 2017. This of course means that all the body mount cushions are new and properly aligned making it ride like brand new.

There is no bonded over ruston the car. Any minor rust has metal welded in. NO rust in the quarters, doors, trunk lid or floor, and driver fender. Car has correct Super Stock II wheels with bolt on chrome caps. Tires are about 4 years old with 95% tread.

Interior needs fundamentally nothing other than tightening down some plastic chrome strips that come loose from heat. Vinyl was redone 8 years ago and looks like new. All new weather stripping was done when we did the frame off to powder coat the chassis. Dash is original without cracks.

upholstery panel, spare, jack, radio, glove box liner, wheel well moldings. Mechanic says needs tie rod ends, control arm bushings.

The body pan is in normal road condition. It is solid but not restored to be shown with mirrors under the car. It is mostly not undercoated with some minor undercoating spray from somewhere back in time. Remember, the frame is PERFECT and never had a stitch of rust.

Lots of work and mechanical restoration has already been done. Why buy a car with shiny paint that could be hiding a LOT of rust and bondo. You will save a LOT on body work with a nearly rust free car.

This car really needs nothing and nowadays, people love customized originals like this.

This convertible does have a genuine GM ram-air hood with the factory screen underneath. The functioning ram-air air cleaner is also genuine GM made. I have the proper Whale Tail but never mounted it. It is actually not correct for a 72.

The nice white convertible top was replaced several years ago, so it is in very good condition with no rips or tears and features the glass back window option. All the padding and the well liner were replaced at that time. The top goes up and down very nicely through the switch on the dash. The doors still open and close like back in 1972. There are a very comfortable pair of bucket seats in very good condition with a nice console his/hers shifter. The entire interior is in relatively nice condition as evident by the pictures. There is also a full set of seat belts present for a family of five.

According to the OldsFaqs website only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an X in the vehicle identification number. The red fender wells that were notorious on the 70 and 71 W-30 models were only red on the very first 10 1972 W-30's that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971, so the prior owner left the original black fender wells on this car to make it appear proper for a W-30 look-a-like in 1972.

I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972.

The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option.
