In the 1930's the six-cylinder Series F helped to keeping the Oldsmobile Automotive Company alive during the tough economical times of the Great Depression. Oldsmobile, at the time, was positioned above Pontiac and below Buick and LaSalle within the GM hierarchy. During the 1930's Oldsmobile was a pioneer in introducing a four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the "Automatic Safety Transmission", although this accessory was actually built by Buick, which would offer it in its own cars in 1938.
