Description of 1956 Oldsmobile 88 2 Door Hardtop 324 V8 |
West Coast Classics are proud to present a very fine mostly all original example with some mild personal customization of this 1956 Oldsmobile 88 2 Door Hardtop in its beautifully custom painted two-tone 'Alcan White over Festival Red' paint with a matching custom interior, with its 324 CID Rocket V8 engine matched to the 'Hydra-Matic' automatic transmission, full wheel covers with 14" white wall tires, spoke steering wheel with full horn ring, electric clock, front and rear fender stainless steel trim, no posts with side windows & rear windows, stainless steel front fender trim, full carpeting and with original factory options of Power Steering, Safety Padded Instrument Panel, AM radio and DeLuxe Heater & Defroster & with added custom gauges & concealed CD player in the glove compartment. One of the USA's most recognized classic cars ever, and arguably one of the best combinations of styling, performance, engineering and craftsmanship seen from Lansing, MI since WWII. Introduced for the 1954 model year the Oldsmobile 88 & 98 series introduced all new X member frames with longer wheel bases (longer on the 98), bigger bore 'Rocket' V8's with more power and colorful new square shouldered styling marked by GM's trendy 'Panaromic' wraparound windshield. Enthusiastic public response boosted Olds from 6th place in industry production to 4th by 1955. In 1956 all models were facelifted flaunting flashy two-toning colors and matching interiors and the series boasted another restyle with the gaping 'mouth' grille, new loop style bumper with horizontal grille bars, an optional safety padded instrument panel protecting the passengers and driver from the all new oval pod at each end instrument panel with a ton of chrome and even more engine power matched to a new and improved version of the popular Hydra-matic transmission known as the 'Jetaway' which was touted as an Oldsmobile triumph that provided more smoothness, power and economy with the added convenience of an all new upgraded 'Park' position from the previous 'Reverse + Handbrake'! This particular example has been reportedly owned and always garaged by southern California owners with the most recent southern California owner having obviously always cherished it as her 'Garage Queen' and having added her own very personal touches. The 324 CID 'Rocket' V8 engine is extremely strong and powerful and this particular car drives very well - must be driven to be fully appreciated - does not miss a beat and purrs like a kitten - drives straight as an arrow with no strange road wobbles, shakes or rattles - a truly remarkable daily driver! The transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the car is an absolute pleasure to drive! |
