Description of 1961 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight

Located in Guthrie, OK

This very original 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88 Celebrity Sedan with only 33,XXX original miles is a four-door finished in tan with a white roof over a tri-tone tan, white, and brown interior and is powered by a 394ci Sky Rocket V8 paired with a three-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Features include 14″ painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, Coker wide whitewall tires, a curved “A” pillar, chrome trim, dual exhaust outlets, air conditioning, front and rear bench seats, and an Oldsmobile AM radio. The car was purchased by the seller in July 2018, and work completed during their ownership has consisted of rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the tires, fuel lines, resealing and repainting the engine and fuel pump. This Super 88 sedan is offered with service records from current ownership, manufacturer’s literature, and a clean Oklahoma title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in tan with a white top and features chrome brightwork on the grille, front and rear bumpers, side moldings, light surrounds, window surrounds, and driver-side mirror. All Super 88 models offered in 1961 and 1962 featured curved “A” pillars, and the celebrity sedan is equipped with a panoramic rear window with an overhanging roofline. The antenna is mast is broken but the AM radio still picks up some nearby stations.

The tan 14″ wheels wear hubcaps and are fitted with 225/75 Coker wide whitewall tires. The car is equipped with power steering and power brakes, and stopping is handled by drum brakes at all four corners. The tires were replaced in October 2018.

The front and rear bench seats are still wearing their original upholstery in tri-tone tan, white, and brown vinyl. A small tear recently developed in the drivers side bench seat just below the steering wheel. The seats are complemented by matching original door panels, a brown dashboard with a black top, and brown carpets. Interior features include air conditioning, vent windows, a locking glove box, cigarette lighter multiple ashtrays and an Oldsmobile push-button AM radio.

The white-rimmed steering wheel fronts a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer and a fuel level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles, approximately 1,500 of which have been added by the seller.

The high compression 394ci Sky Rocket V8 features a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 325 horsepower. Work completed since 2018 includes rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the fuel lines and fuel pump. The engine was also pulled to have it cleaned up, resealed and repainted so that it would look as new under the hood as it does everywhere else on the car. The oil and filter were changed in preparation for sale.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Normal surface corrosion is visible underneath but there are no signs of any major rust on this very well cared for original Olds. The car still wears its original paint and chrome. There is minimal corrosion or degrading of the beautiful chrome bumpers or emblems. The paint is original and still looks great. It does have a couple of chips in the paint as can seen in the photos.
