Description of 1970 Opel |
1970 Opel GT 1.9L 4 speed manual Restored opel GT. Spent over two years working on this car as a father and son project. We purchased the car in Illinois where it had been sitting for quite some time. We decided to maintain as much of the car's original parts as possible and so spent quite a bit of time disassembling and restoring whatever we could. The car runs and drives very well but does burn a little oil. The following outlines at a high level what we did and what still needs/could be done. Interior - entire interior removed, sound deadening material installed throughout, new carpet installed seats re-upholstered, door cards repaired, rear panel recovered and everything cleaned. Headliner is original and was in great shape. rebuilt the entire venting system. Exterior - The car was stripped down, windows taken out all trim handles lights etc removed, wheel stripped and powder coated, bodywork professionally completed. It was not stripped to bare metal but was worked on extensively and painted professionally a medium spiral gray metallic from the original chartreuse which came out really well. I would say this is a good 10ft paint job but there are some defects and a couple of repairs that are needed as can be seen from the pictures. There is some figuring from the old body work that can be seen in the paint on the passenger's side. Certainly not a perfect paint job but very passable in my opinion. Mechanical - lots here - replaced, resoldered a ton of wiring, removed everything except for the engine and replaced much of it. New 3 core radiator, all rubber hoses replaced, new alternator, new water pump, heater core removed, and restored, converted from points to electronic ignition, replaced solex carb with new weber, restored wiper motors, fixed headlight harness, all new brake lines, fuel sender repaired, new e-brake cables and pads, window regulators repaired, all exterior lighting rewired/repaired. What still needs to be done -The dash is cracked and needs to be repaired. I attempted the repair but it cracked again in the same places. The speedo is not working (fairly certain it is the $40 drive gear), The starter may need to be replaced soon as the it grinds occasionally when starting, no radio installed, clock doesn't work, engine temp sensor not working, external window trim needs to be installed (included), missing fuse panel cover, leaks some oil from the oil pan. I'm certain I'm missing some small things but in general this is a pretty straight car. It drives really nicely and gets attention wherever we go in it. We took this car to a European car show after we finished and it won best in show! It isn't perfect but would be a great car for someone who wants to do a little work while being able to use it. The numbers all match on this car and I have a clear title in hand and a ton of parts to go with it.I'm happy to help with providing additional information or pictures if needed and will work with you on co-ordinating inspection or delivery. |
