Description of 1953 Other Makes |
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this exceptionally rare and well-preserved 1953 Daimler Empress II left-hand drive saloon. Relatively few Empress IIs were built in the first place. and nearly all of them were right-hand-drive models. Only five left-hand-drive versions were built. and this is the only LHD Empress II known to still exist. People often mistake this car for a Rolls-Royce -- and until the early 1950s. the Daimler was considered by many to be the superior car. The company. England's oldest car manufacturer. had a royal warrant to supply cars to the British monarchy from 1902 to 1950; the Crown gradually switched to Rolls-Royce in the 1950s. Hand built of aluminum by Hooper coachworks. it's an exquisitely designed car with exceptional build quality. The doors still close with ease and precision. All panels are straight with good gaps; paint quality. brightwork and glass are excellent. The interior. clad in wood and leather. is in remarkable mostly original condition. All switches. indicators. lights and gauges are working properly. The engine compartment is very tidy. as one would expect with only 42. 00 miles. The 3-liter inline six runs smoothly; the innovative Wilson Preselector gearbox works just as it should. Steering and brakes feel great. It's an easier car to drive and the controls feel considerably less heavy than Rolls-Royces from the same era. A trove of documentation comes with this example. including the owner's handbook. factory service manual and historic advertising material. With ownership history back to new and service records dating back to 1961. it's certainly one of the better documented vintage cars of any sort. Chauffeur-driven for the first part of its life and museum kept for the latter part. the Empress has always been well maintained. All service is up to date and we are not aware of any needs. mechanically or cosmetically.
