Description of 1956 Other Makes

1956 Speedster replica

Just in time for summer and no waiting, up for your consideration is this stunning 1956 Vintage Speedster complete with the ultimate 356 engine ever designed, a 1965 Porsche SC engine. With real Speedster pricing into the stratosphere, this affordable version gives you the freedom to actually drive the car as they were intended.

This particular version separates itself from the pack with its' attention to detail and of course it's original Porsche engine. Do some research; you rarely find a Porsche engine in these replica cars. That's part of what makes this one unique. I've only heard of a handful ever, and never seen one for sale. Check eBay and you will see lesser versions of this engine going for $10,000 plus a $6000 core charge. This car was constructed out of all new parts or new reconditioned parts. No 50 year old used donor car parts.

This car was purchased from Vintage Speedsters in Southern California. The car is based on a 1968 VW and is registered as such. The pan, chassis, alignment, brakes etc. were all set up by Vintage Speedsters and the body/paint/assembly were left to me. Often these cars are criticized for lack of quality but I assure you this one is taken to the next level. I have 45 years experience and used it all to build this car for my wife. She wants to move to Hawaii and car does not fit in to that plan.

BODY:

While the normal procedure is to do the bodywork and then block the body once, this body was blocked 4 times for a near perfect finish. All the body panels were removed and massaged to near perfection before reinstalling. Often on fiberglass bodies, the panel fit is less than perfect. Hours were spent on preparation and these doors fit, open and close PERFECTLY.

Most replicas have ugly exposed heater hoses in the wheel wells (front and rear). I spent 2 weeks with car on a rotisserie building false walls and smoothing the wheel wells so as to mimic the original speedsters. Area was then sprayed with bed liner material for cleaner look and easier cleaning. Engine cover is a Carrera style louvered cover and 1956 Beehive tail lights complete the look from the rear.

After extensive prep work, the body was then painted with 3 color coats of an original Slate Grey and then 6 coats of House of Kolor Klear. The color was taken from an original garaged kept car of the same color. The door jams, which never see the sun, were shot with a computer gun and then painstakingly matched to provide an exact match to Porsche's original color.

INTERIOR:

The Brandywine color interior accents the slate grey perfectly. I get more compliments on this color combo than any car I've built. Full Dynamat sound deadening insulation- the best you can buy. When doing the final assembly I had the good fortune to have an original Speedster in the neighborhood for referrence. The Gold Script on the dash and the extra padding on the dash again mimic the original. The radio is a modern radio made to look like vintage style of the period. Speakers are hidden up under the dash as is the power charging outlet for your phone! No speakers in the door for this ride. Easy to do but they kill the old school look. Radio is blue tooth capable etc. but if I'm being honest the sound is not as crisp as the sound system in my Mercedes. It's fine cause with the top down and the engine singing in your ear that's all I need cruising down the coast! Coco mats on the floor complete the original vibe.

ENGINE:

Of all the 356 engines offered over the years, the pinnacle was the 1965 SC. This one has matching number original cases, all 3 pieces. Basham Motorsports, sparing no expense, rebuilt this much-coveted engine to perfection. It's now 1720cc, even most purists approve of this small increase in size, and has a modern version of the original cam. Brand new $3000 SCAT crank. Comes with the original Solex pII-40 carbs, rebuilt as well with original air cleaners. Whenever there was an option (like cylinders, pistons etc.), I opted for the more expensive parts, avoiding the cheap Chinese alternatives. Same goes for the electronics as well-I opted for the more expensive Bosche options, keeping it true to original. The car is 12 volt. Original 6 volt generator was rebuilt using Bosche internals to convert to 12V while retaining original appearance. Engine has very minor oil leaks common for these engines and the bulk is from the valve covers. 65 had a unique check valve design in the valve covers that lends itself to minor leaks and if I kept it I would probably change them out to the next generation covers. It's minor so I just wipe them occasionally. The transmission is the 3:88 ratio VW, completely rebuilt. New Kennedy clutch and flywheel. Heater/defroster is not hooked up but all cables, ducting, hardware etc. are in place should you want it hooked up.

Car has ½ tonneau cover and comes with the original style side curtain windows. Trunk has nice carpet kit installed and also has front and rear heavy-duty stabilizer bars, which help with handling as do the front disc brakes. This car starts, stops, accelerates, corners better than the original!!!

The car has approx. 800 KM (497miles), just broke in and well sorted out. Second service has just been performed on the engine including valves adjusted, timing reset, oil and filter change. There is no warranty on the vehicle. Car is available for inspection and I would encourage you to take advantage of that. No low ballers, no I don't want your broken jet ski in trade. I can assist in with shipping. Car is also for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the sale early.
