The body style, originally exhibited as a 1954Chevrolet CorvetteMotorama concept car, was shifted toChevroletand Pontiac full-size 1955 production vehicles because of the perceived greater sales potential. During its run, the Safari would be sold as its own station wagon model as well as a designation applied to Pontiac's various other station wagon vehicles. The name "safari" is derived from theSwahiliwordsafari, which meansjourney,originally from theArabicسÙر (safar) meaninga journey; the verb for "to travel" in Swahili iskusafiri.
