Description of 1949 Packard Standard Eight |
1949 Packard Standard Eight "Straight 8" 288ci Motor, manual transmission with electric overdrive. Fully restored top-to-bottom including paint, glass, weatherstripping, upholstery, motor/drivetrain. Refinished in its original shade of Coronet Blue, a beautiful color that sets this Packard apart from the more common blacks, maroons, and tans found on most cars of the 1940's. All chrome professionally replated, all stainless polished. Interior sewn in pinstriped broadcloth with contrasting piping, as original. Four new BF Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewalls, new battery. Starts instantly, and runs and drives effortlessly with good power. Lights, wipers, heater, turn signals, and horn all work, everything necessary for safe and comfortable cruising. I bought this car from a gentleman who purchased it from the estate of the man who restored it, and had passed away. Therefore I can't say too much in detail, except that I was told that the entire drivetrain (motor, transmission, clutch, brakes, etc) were also rebuilt, and I have every reason to believe this based on the way the car runs, drives, and shifts. All the mechanical components are clean, repainted, and have clean nuts and fasteners. A few minor things: I would recommend that the new owner consider a carb cleaning, since it idles just a bit rich, and I have adjusted the mixture screw as far as it will go. The only other flaws worth mentioning are that the radio doesn't work, the heater control valve had a slight leak that has recently stopped, the rubber mat under the driver's right foot was broken (but I re-rubberized the spot to blend in and installed a mat to cover it), the dash light bulbs were never replaced (new ones included), and a mouse ate a hole in the headliner on the passenger side above the door (see photo, very minor and no smell). Overall, this is a turn-key car that you can drive home and begin enjoying immediately. The overdrive makes this one of the few vintage cars of this era that you can enjoy on the highway - it cruises comfortably on the interstate! Take it on highway tours or fill it with grandkids for a trip out for ice cream. I can't say enough good things about this Packard - clean, comfortable, quiet, good power and speed, beautiful color, and chrome so perfect you could use it for a shaving mirror. Offered for less than it would cost to have one painted! I'm happy to answer any and all questions, and potential buyers are welcome and encouraged to see and drive the car before bidding. Located in Butte, Montana at the crossroads of Interstates 15 and 90 for easy transport. |
