The 3 P’s included Packard, Peerless, and Pierce-Arrow, with Packard leading the charge. Packard was one of Cadillac’s largest competitors for nearly 6 decades until their demise in 1956. When owning a Packard, you were leagues above the rest. Even though Packard was a leader in the luxury car race, they did offer a few “entry- level†models. In 1951, the high-level cars were the 300 and the 400 Patrician, with the entry level cars being the 200 and the 250. The major differences between the 200 and 250 were the 288 c.i. inline-8 vs the 327 c.i. inline-8, and that the 250 was offered in a convertible. From an entry-level standpoint, the 250 convertible was the best money could buy from Packard in 1951. During that year, only 2,572 250 convertibles were made out of the 100,713 total Packard production, making this a fairly uncommon classic. The example on offer is presented in an elegant Corona Cream over Burgundy. Under the hood is a 4.9 Liter inline-6 from Ford, a commonly used motor in the Ford F-series, E-Series, and Bronco from the mid-1960’s to the mid 1990’s. This engine provides more power than the original inline-8, along with more reliability and better fuel economy. This car is the perfect candidate for a relaxing afternoon drive or cruising the legendary Woodward Avenue located just outside of Detroit, the home of Packard. A few notes from the current owners....rust free and always kept in heated garage. From the outside she is all original. New paint. New top and seat covers but everything else came off the car. I replaced the unreliable Packard Flat 8 with a 4.9L 6 cylinder from a Ford F-150. I love driving her now and would feel confident I could drive her across the country. Not a race car but that was not my intention. I just wanted to enjoy automobilia the way it used to be. Pleasant drives in the country or downtown for dinner. I do not have the original engine/transmission. It is in OR and buyer would have to make separate arrangements. She looks good enough that I have had her in local shows and boy do I get the crowds. No trophies, but the people sure do love to gawk. You will get attention wherever you go. Power top goes down and up as if she were new. The speedometer and radio are only things that don't work. Overall, it's a great driver and one you can count on.
