Description of 1970 Plymouth Barracuda

1970 Panther Pink FM3 #’s Matching 340 Cuda

This is a truly exceptional example of one of the most rare and collectible Mopars in the world.

This Cuda wears a legit FM3 Moulin Rouge paint better known by its Dodge brother’s name Panther Pink. This car was originally purchased by a woman – we know this because the car comes with the original Pink Slip with her name on it. How is that for provenance? Most dudes in 1970 were very unlikely to check the FM3 box when they were ordering their Cuda making it the rarest of colors. I have heard the 340 called a “canyon carver” meaning it is the better engine for handling to get through twists and turns without wiping out.

This is a numbers matching engine, trans, and body. It has all original sheet metal and is rust free. The car was born and raised in CA (vin is BS23HOE – the E = Made in CA). It left for about a year to Ill where it was in a climate controlled garage and never driven in the snow or rain. It returned to me in LA with its original Blue and Yellow CA plates in the trunk. It was dressed up with a shaker hood when I got it. I added repopped louvers and a go wing to dress it up as cool as a Cuda can look. But rest easy purists! This car comes with the original hood, air cleaner and much more. Any original part that I took off has been stored safely. Since the last owner put on the shaker hood I thought it would be cool to finish it off with the coolest extras that 1970 had to offer. I think of it as dressing up my super-hot girlfriend (and maybe even a little augmentation to her which most guys don’t think is so bad!). It has original factory markings on the undercarriage (see pics). It bears its original fender tag and vin plate. When I say #’s matching I mean all #’s match (see pics of engine trans etc). This has been confirmed by a vin check from a retired LA Sheriff Auto Theft Detective with 30 years experience. And you can see the pics yourself!

Work done? Darn near everything with lots of receipts included! It had one repaint before I got it but you can see original FM3 paint in certain parts of the car. I had it wet sanded and the paint pops. The engine bay is pristine as is the engine itself. I had everything I could think of done including rebuilt engine, trans, radiator, brakes, suspension, and much much more. Almost everything mechanical has been gone through. New tires and disc brakes were added (I wanted to be able to stop it bc I like to drive fast). Again purists don’t worry bc the original drum brakes are included.

The born on date for this FM3 Cuda is Feb 26, 1970. My research has shown that the first known FM3 Mopar of any kind was born on Feb 11, 1970. This one was built so close to the first ever FM3 Mopar known to exist that I think this may be the first CA Cuda to bare the beautiful Panther Pink color (I know it’s moulin rouge but everybody likes to call it panther pink). Another clue is that the fender tag shows it was built as a sales bank car (Y16). That means nobody ordered it they just built it because they wanted to. Since it was only 15 days after FM3 first became available it makes some sense that they just wanted to paint one that color to have ready. How many original FM3, #’s matching, original metal Cudas even exist? I can’t tell you exactly but you are looking at an amazing example of one right here! The 70 Cuda is a rare beast in and of itself with only around 18,000 made. And not to rag on its younger brother but the 70 kicks butt over the 71 with its cheese grater grill. And again I make no apologies for taking her to the plastic surgeon after the previous owner put the shaker hood on her bc anything that came off I safely stored.

The interior is pristine as is the trunk that has the spare, air can, and jack assembly. No dents or dings. She is an auto trans and loves to drive. I live near the hills of Palos Verdes CA and she loves going up and around the hills and curves. I drive her regularly which is a good thing for Mopars. I put good money into her so she is well preserved for the future. The original Raisin Bran (two scoops) hood has a scratch on it. Some of the original chrome trim shows its age. The original dash is cracked by the speaker (it happened to almost all Cudas). It has the original radio but it needs a new speaker. I do not have a build sheet but I have never pulled the seats to look. But man there is very little bad to say about my girl. She is smoking hot.

This is an investment grade Cuda. The rarest of the rare. I love her to death but life throws you some curve balls and I need to move her on to the next guy (or girl!). I am happy to answer any questions and if you want to speak with the retired Detective he knows a lot about her too and is willing to speak with you as well. I won’t give her away but the reserve is set at what I consider to be below fair market value and less than I have invested in her. And well below what she is insured for with Hagerty. I can email the fender tag picture and what all the codes mean and all receipts for work for serious buyers. Good luck and happy bidding!

She is for sale as is. A non-refundable $1,500 deposit is required within 48 hours of the auction ending. Pay pal is fine for the deposit but the balance must be paid within 7 days with a wire transfer or a cashier’s check. Buyer is responsible to arrange and pay for shipping.
