Description of 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

">

In the late 70s and early 80s, he Pontiac Trans Am was on a popularity roll! Burt Reynolds made a black one famous as the Bandit, nd they were widely regarded by most as the last true muscle car on the planet. As you can probably tell these cars are back and more popular than ever; and the upswing in value and collectability for pristine, ighly optioned examples shows no signs of slowing! Astute buyers are beginning to take advantage of the opportunity to sign the papers on the Trans Ams of their fond childhood memories before prices really begin to rise. And this awesome 1979 model, ith its numbers matching powertrain, ong list of desirable options and full list of original documentation, s the perfect investment for a savvy buyer who wants to stash back one of the hottest collector cars on the market, r a hardcore Pontiac fan who just wants a car that'll provide years of fun! Included with the sale is all this Trans Am's original documents (not copies) even including the business card of the salesman from 1979!

Assembled in 1979 at the California Van Nuys factory, his highly optioned Trans Am is the property of the same owner since 1980 and was maintained meticulously by the local Chrysler/GM dealership. Today, t's an unrestored, xceptionally maintained second generation F-body which wears 100% original body panels that are as straight as the day they left the showroom floor. Because those original panels have never been taken apart or received any major repairs, he car still displays completely correct panel gaps which look surprisingly good and provide accurate factory alignment. Currently, he car presents as practically brand new with just a subtle amount of desirable patina. It displays the correct coat of GM code 19 Starlite Black paint which gives it a slick, actory appearance. On top of the glossy and subdued paint, bold set of Trans Am call outs combine with a menacing five color ‘screaming eagle' hood decal to create some of the most recognized muscle car war paint of all time.

This all business F2 pony car combines traditional Pontiac attitude with a refined look and cutting edge appointments that were way ahead of their time. Up front, slick and pliable urethane front bumper houses four pristine headlights above large dual air intakes which, hile still being instantly identifiable as Pontiacs familiar split grille face, ive the car a much more aggressive look. Behind that front bumper, traditional shaker hood sits in front of a pristine Soft Ray glass and proudly displays "T/A 6.6"denoting the cars small block high torque Pontiac engine. At the sides of the car, orrect body matched inserts sit between bold "Trans Am"call outs, raditional fender mounted air extractors, hrome door handles and correct rear wheel air deflectors. And at the top of the car, hrome drip rails combine with chrome B-pillar trim to highlight a stiff hardtop roof. At the back of the car, bright "Trans Am"call out spans a correct rear decklid spoiler; and correct Firebird exclusive side splitter stainless exhaust tips hang below a correct blacked out tail light panel.

Under the hood, .6 Litres of GM power back up the car's angry demeanor. While roughly 1,100 1979 Trans Ams left the factory with a Poncho 400, he vast majority came equipped with the L80 403ci V8 as found in this example. The foundation is an Oldsmobile-sourced block with a matching VIN derivative to prove its authenticity. Under the hood scoop, he single-snorkel air cleaner assembly mounts over a single Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor while 4A heads with big combustion chambers frame a stock intake manifold. While horsepower numbers aren't exactly off the charts, he 315lb-ft of torque does a great job of covering that fact. For those that are interested, ook up this link: (www.texastransams.com/articles/2002ron_l_403_article.htm) if you're looking to ‘Rocket Boost' this engine. This site will provide you with a simple recipe of relatively inexpensive parts that will see you get 300-350 horsepower out of this motor.

Up front, he accessory drive turns all the usual suspects including a power steering pump, lternator, nd air conditioning compressor as a radiator pairs with a single engine-driven fan to keep the big V8 cool. The car fires to life with ease and sends spent gases out through an elaborate exhaust system that utilizes a crossover tube to connect the driver side manifold to the passenger side. From there, single pipe leads to the stock catalytic converter followed by a Y-pipe with twin resonators and splitter tips.

At the bottom of this Trans Am, straight and clean 36 year old undercarriage tells the story of excellent caretaking with rock solid floor pans that still display their light factory undercoating. Behind the motor, n original TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, hich wears a correct VIN, ends power to the cars original Posi-traction rear end which spins factory equipped 2.73 gears. Equipped with standard power steering, ll that great hardware creates some pretty serious handling ability and greatly reduced stopping distances. In the middle of the car, mandrel bent true dual exhaust system barks through factory replacement mufflers and trade mark dual muffler tips. The car sits on a set of aluminum Pontiac snow flake wheels with ‘red bird' center caps wrapped in Goodyear Eagle GTII white letter. The tires are in excellent shape and have approximately 80-85% tread left. Aesthetically, ll the cars hardware and bushings appear to be in good shape, owever; the paint does have some imperfections. Mechanically the car drives great but given its age some of the seals in the drive train may be starting to dry up a bit however there are no known leaks.

Swing open the cars infamously long doors and you'll find a correct deluxe interior that looks fantastic and aside from a little sun fading on the front seats, isplays hardly any signs of wear at all. The firm and comfortable seats are nice high backed pieces that feature heavy-duty cloth covers and sit on like-new black carpet, hich looks great. Between the seats, clean black console houses chrome switches for the cars power windows behind a chrome shifter showing the eagle emblem; and above the seats, stain free headliner is stretched tight around the cars optional dome reading lamp. In front of the driver, n excellent looking engine turned dash houses crystal clear gauges, hich include an optional tic-toc-tachometer, bove controls for heat and air conditioning, nd a stereo. And at the sides of the seats, wesome black door panels feature correct ‘red bird' emblems, hrome power door lock switches and fade-free armrests inside of pristine stainless trim. Connecting the driver to the road is a factory optioned Formula steering wheel that features a black rim and sits on an optional tilt steering column. At the back of the cockpit, he cars pristine trunk sandwiches an original Goodyear Space Saver spare tire and hardware, ncluding the original gas charger, etween correct decals and an upscale carpeted mat.
