Description of 1968 Pontiac Firebird |
This is an all original 1968 Pontiac Firebird 350 automatic. It was owned by my friends father since 1977 and kept in a garage. He bought it from a neighbor who neglected it, eaving it to deteriorate. Gave it a minor restoration in 1986, eplacing the vinyl top and repainting it. Guess they missed the floor issue. While replacing the starter the garage pointed out the rust/rot but I didn't take any photos. There doesn't seem to be anyon the rest of the car. The body mounting bolts are all in great condition. The rot seems to be limited to the floor only. Looks worse on the passenger side. The floors can support weight and not like you can see the road or anything through it. Cannot be seen from the side of the car. I did not have a lift to take photos, o I did the best I could. There are a few small bubbles on the lower rear rocker panel that should be addressed. The paint is in great shape considering its nearly 30 years old. All the chrome is also in great shape. Interior seems to be good also. We tried to change the turn signal bulbs and must have damaged the plastic printed circuit board on the speedometer causing the dash lights to stop working. All other electrics work. Radio is original along with 99% of the rest of the car. Tires seems to be fair. I replaced the valve cover gaskets a little over a year ago and everything was fine. The car started running really rough and stopped pumping oil. Its possible one of the gears has deteriorated. My mechanic seems to think the oil pump has died, nd said its quite easy to change. The car does start and can be moved but I would suggest against that. I would pull the engine and fix it, ut I do not have the time. Its a fairly simple and cheap fix. The best thing about these cars is the parts are readily available and mass produced. The rot will need to be addressed also before it gets any worse. 4 wheel drum. Power nothing. This car is for someone who has the time and money to bring it back to its former glory. The owner passed away a while ago and the car is in probate.
