Description of 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula |
Tony’s Muscle Cars, Sugarloaf, PA is Offering:
1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula RESTOMOD New LS3 480 HP with HOT CAM Black and Gold Bandit Color Scheme T56 Magnum Tremec 6 speed Transmission What do you get when you start with the incredible looks of an early 70’s Formula, give it a laser straight base/clear black paint job then add the performance, drivability and reliability of a new GM Performance LS3 6.2 liter 480 horsepower fuel injected crate engine and Tremec T56 Magnum 6 speed manual transmission with freshly built 3.90 posi rear? …. You get the ULTIMATE MUSCLE CAR….Awesome looks, Awesome power, Reliability, Great Gas Mileage, GM Performance Warranty, Drag strip performance coupled with Highway Cruising ability….this package offers it ALL!!! It all started with an original 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula. The car was all stripped to bare metal and sandblasted. The original doors, fenders, trunk lid, Endura Nose and ORIGINAL Fiberglas Pontiac Ram Air dual snorkel hood were all given meticulous body work until laser straight. New quarter panels were then installed and welded on the car. Then the car was painted with a urethane base coat clear coat black paint job. All panels were painted apart and the jambs inside the doors, fenders and trunk lid are very nicely done. In the engine bay, the firewall had its factory heater box holes welded closed then the firewall was worked with body filler and painted gloss black for the smooth custom look. The inner wheel liners in the engine bay also received a fair amount of body work smoothed out and painted gloss black as well to match the firewall. The exterior has the black and gold “Bandit” look that combines all the incredible attributes of an early 70’s Firebird - the Ram Air dual snorkel Formula hood, Trans Am wheel flares, Gold grills, BRAND NEW YEAR ONE 17 inch snowflake wheels outfitted with new matching 245 / 40 / 17 tires. All new 4 piece (windshield, door and rear) smoked glass with dark gray tint goes right along with the theme of the car. And if you look close you can see that the smooth look carries to the rear bumper that was customized by welding the bumper bolts closed and further to the side marker lights being eliminated on the fenders and quarter panels. The interior carries though the black and gold Bandit theme with black leather power bucket seats from a 2001 Trans Am (we are waiting on the headrests to be finished at our upholstery shop). You will also find in the interior a custom upholstered rear seat to match the front seats, new molded black headliner, new Essex black carpeting, new black deluxe door panels, and gold turned aluminum dash insert with new gold factory style Trans Am steering wheel. The interior has Dakota Digital gauge package in the original dash bezel openings for the factory look along with a Vintage AC and Heat factory fit system that bolts right in the factory dash location. The 6 speed Hurst Shifter pokes out of the interior hump using a factory Trans Am shifter boot, Hurst short throw shifter handle and white shifter ball. Finally a factory Pontiac tilt steering column adds to the comfort of adjusting the steering wheel where you would like it to be. The Heart of the Car: A brand new factory GM Performance LS3 crate engine was purchased with factory installed “HOT CAM” producing 480 horsepower. These engines are incredible, if you want to drive slow they have super mild manners but as soon as you hit the accelerator it has brute big block style power…. they have good gas mileage (93 octane pump gas friendly), they fire up with the legendary fuel injection power….no messing with chokes, no messing with carburators, no messing with timing, no worries about the engine running hot in traffic…..these engines are GREAT! We painted the intake plenum red to match the lettering on the factory Corvette engine covers and had a custom FORMULA decal made to cover the Corvette lettering on the covers. We added a front runner serpentine belt kit manufactured by Holley Performance giving you a stock GM look with brand new alternator, power steering pump and new Sanden Mini SD7 AC compressor. New aluminum radiator and electric fan along with a new Delco battery finishes off the engine bay. Gear banging is super enjoyable with the new Tremec T56 6 speed manual transmission. First through fourth gears gets right down to business with the 3.90 gears out back. Pop it into 5th and 6th overdrive gears for nice highway cruising at low RPM’s. The transmission handles 700 ft. lbs. of torque and shifts effortlessly with the new hydraulic clutch system. New brake lines along with chrome smoothie master cylinder and brake booster was added. A new EFI gas tank was added with fuel pump and sender right inside the tank for low operating noise. New shocks, bushings, ball joints and steering components were all added. The rear was disassembled and all new posi unit along with new 3.90 gears make up the rear differential. New beefy driveshaft was cut to length, balanced and out fitted with new U-joints. Finally wrapping up the underside is a new custom bent aluminized 2 ½ inch exhaust starting with a stainless set of shorty headers, custom H pipe, Turbo style mufflers and factory chrome “hockey stick” tips exit through the rear.
