Description of 1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible |
1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible with a 400 cubic inch engine selling at "No Reserve" They simple don't make cars as extraordinary looking specimens like these anymore.This sweet 1968 PontiacFirebird was purchased brand spanking newatthe UniversalPontiac dealership located at 5903 Sheridan Road in Kenosha, Wisconsin back in 1968.It still had the original paint that sported the chromeUniversal Pontiac Dealer tag on the back panel to the left of the cool gas spout cover to the right of the drivers side tail light. It was not in pristine condition, soI chose not to remountthe original dealer emblemon the car after the fresh paint work.That original Universal Kenosha emblem will be included in the glove box with the 1968 Pontiac owner's manual. This Firebirdhas spentthe last 30 years ofexistence in East Troy, Wisconsin in the garage ofthe previousFirebird lover that never got around to giving it the fresh paint job it deserved. It was last titled on 9/21/1984 to a female in Rockford, Illinois, and I located the prior registration that expired on November 30th 1986. It appears that this Firebird spent some time in Chandler, Arizona according to the documents I found. Those will also be included with this sale. This is the first time this awesome Pontiac has ever been offered to the public on eBay. I will explain everything I found out from the previous owner at the point of purchase. The body on thisFirebird wasstill ingood condition sporting its original paint and original convertible top. The paint was faded so it was bathed in beautiful Cardinal Red this pastNovember of 2016. The body was completely striped to bare metal to prepare the body for paint. All of the body panels are believed to be the originals and that's why I believe all the gaps are near the way these cars rolled out of the factory back in 1967 for the 1968 model year. The body was meticulously prepped by one of my close friends that has been doing professional body and paint work for over 25 years.If any interested parties would care to send their cell phone number I would be more than happy to text them pictures of how this Firebird was prepped and painted in the paint booth. EBay only allows 24 pictures, so I ran out of room to show how nice the car came out. After the entire body was striped and prepped it wasprimed and then primer sealed before a full gallon of PPG Cardinal Red paint was applied followed byfour coats of the most expensive Dupont clear coat I could find on the market. The body was then wet sanded at three different levels - 1000 grit, then 1500 grit, followed by 2000 grit before it was buffed to bring out the glossy mirror shine as evident in the pictures. I've been told by everyone who sees this car that the paint work on thisBird looks spectacular. This body is virtually laser straight from every angle that it is viewed. After the fresh paint work was performed brand new wheel opening moldings were installed with brand new rocker molding covers, and brand new quarter panel chrome vents followed bybrand new 400 emblems on the GM dual scooped hood.There will be endless compliments coming to whoever is the lucky winner of this rare classic Firebird droptop. The prior owner told me that this car had never been in any accidents and I scrutinized this entire car and saw no signs of it ever being hit, and that is why I believe all of the body panels to be original to this car. The speedometer is the original 160 miles per hour speedometer, although the odometer has slightly rolled over and actually reads 03709 because they did not have the 7 digit odometers back in those days.I tried to addall of the factory decals under the hood and in the trunk compartment tomake this Firebirdappear as close to thewaythese Birdsrolled out of the factory on to the showroom floor. This 400 Pontiac engine was nicely detailedandhas abrand new fuel pump, brand new starter, and new brake hoses and brake lines, so it stops very well. The quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor has just been freshly rebuilt and installed last month. Needless to say with the fresh rebuilt carburetorthisFirebird starts right up and sounds awesome with fresh new dual exhaust installed from the front pipes all the way out the back of the brand new chrome exhaust tips. I don't know all that much about Pontiacs but I believe the chrome exhaust tips are correct for the 1968 Firebird, but I was told they are alsothe 1968-69 GTO chrome exhaust tips. This 400 engine was nicely detailed witha Pontiac blue. SinceI don't know all that much about Pontiac's a buddy who is a Pontiac gurulooked up the numbers on the block and the numbers are not matching, butthey decode as XX that he stated as coming out of a 1967 GTOwhich is the high horse 400/360 horsepower engine. Thedash had some minor cracking, so a new dash pad was installed to make the interior appear in very nice condition. There was somereplacement floor pan work done followed bybrand new black carpet that sports a new set of four black carpeted floor mats. The bucket seats, rear seats, and all the interior side panelsare alloriginal to this car.This Firebird was factory ordered with the bucket seat column shift option. Yes, The old school dual cup holder in between the front bucket seats is included in the sale. All of the original GMfactory seat belts are still in place that will belt in a family of five. The original AM radio is still in place and I was told that itdoes work, but probably needs a new speaker. The chrome antenna is also believed to be in the original spot on the right rear quarter panel and has the long factory antenna plug wire to insert in the rear of the AM radio. Ibelieve the winning bidder will want to upgrade the sound system, somusical choicewill be left up to the new owner. The Brand new black convertible top was completely replaced with new padding, so it should stay in nice condition for many years to enjoy top down cruising. This Firebird Convertible rides ona full set of four very nice B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A raised white lettered tires with like new tread with 70's on the front and 60's on the rear ona set offour Pontiac Rally II wheels that were restored with four red PMD center caps, four chrome beauty trim rings,and a full set of 20 new chrome lug nuts. The trunk floor is in nice condition and was coated with AC Delco black and aqua spatter spray to make it appear factory correct. I've never seen these on any muscle car before in my life, but there are four weight canisters in each corner of the car. One on each side in the very front of each fender and one on each corner of the trunk compartment as viewed in the trunk area pictures. I believe they were used to stabilize these Firebirds. My buddy made me aware that those canisters were mounted from the factory. The very rareoriginal jack, jack stand and crow bar were nicely detailed and sit on a new trunk mat. The trunk also carriesthe original very hard to find compact space saver spare tire and wheel with the original canister to inflate the spare tire. Those components were usually long gone after almost half a decade, but they are all original to this car. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up on-line has the 1968PontiacFirebird Convertiblewith a GTO 400/360 horsepower engine and rally wheels valued at $80,400 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. They have the average condition valued at $45,600 which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out.They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer! They have the lowest condition value at $24,720being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The numbers don't lie! The 1967 Red Firebird Convertible that I showed a picture of from the Barrett-Jackson auction in October of 2016 was the very first Firebird that rolled out of the Pontiac factory yet it did not have the ram-air hood or the rear spoiler and only had hubcaps. I just thought it would be nice to share that with the lookers of my auction. An exorbitant amount of time, money, and effort went into making this Firebird Convertible look like this.
