Description of 1967 Pontiac Le Mans |
Featured here is a great 1967 Pontiac LeMans 2 door hard top. This is a great car for someone who wants a fun cruiser and doesn’t want to get involved in a serious restoration. It’s a great looking car that you can buy and drive with some little detail jobs to tinker on when you are not hitting the cruise nights or cars and coffee. She really runs well and is very reliable and a real head turner. This car has a great 70’s street terror vibe to it with its lifted stance, meaty tires out back and American Racing mag wheels, it looks Woodward Ave all the way! This care is a really looker and has actually been used in several promotional videos for my employer a well known collector insurance company. The car was stored off and on for about 15-20 years. Previous owners would get the car out occasionally and work on it, maybe cruise it around town a little. Just enough to keep good gas in it and keep it running. The Pontiac GTOs have been strong contenders in the muscle car market and as they say “rising waters raise all ships”, the Pontiac LeMans offers a lower cost alternative yet with good investment quality.. https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1967-Pontiac-LeMans?id=118428 This car is equipped with a Pontiac 400, 400 turbo-hydramatic transmission and posi-traction rear end and along with its “Arrest Me Red” paint job makes it a great bridge between “The Goat” and an awesome cruiser. Here are the details: Finish: The red paint has outstanding luster even though it is 20 years old. It appears to be an amateur applied single stage paint. Because the car was stored most of the time there is couple scratches in it; one 5-6 inch scratch in the hood on the passenger side on the the leading edge of the hood. There is alsoa scratch I was told the barn cat assigned to protect the car while in storage put on the rear passenger quarter panel while jumping on the car. There are a couple other very minor blemishes here and there in the paint but overall it is a “5-10” footer and presents really well. There is no bubbling of the paint anywhere. I would rate it as driver quality-plus. Body: As you look at the photos you can see the car is very clean rust wise. The passenger front floor and the trunk floor have been replaced. The bodywork is very good and there is no rust bubbling which is impressive for an older amateur restoration. As the pictures show this is a very solid car and very clean. Frame: The frame is very clean, with no rust or signs of collision or repair as shown in the photos. Bumpers: The front bumper is original with some patina but still has nice luster. The rear bumper has been painted flat black. Brightwork/trim: The original brightwork is present and in good shape, there is some scratches here in there but could be restored with buffing but present well as is. I have the lower rocker trim for the car with mounting brackets. I left it off as I liked the way it looked as pictured, but will be included with the sale Glass: Side and rear glass is original and in very good condition. I had the rear window re-sealed as it had a small leak. Front windshield is a replacement and has a small repair were a chip was filled. Interior: There has been a great deal of new parts put into the interior, including new carpet, door panels, front and rear arm rests and headliner. Dash pad is free of any cracks or sun damage. The gauge bezel has been re-painted and detailed and features stock idiot lights, but have a set of vintage Sun oil pressure and water temperature gauges mounted under the dash. This a factory bucket seat car with console. Shifter was updated to a Hurst His and Hers Factory shifter. The door and side window weatherstrip have all be replaced. It looks great with original seat vinyl which shows some wear but will work for now but will need replacing eventually. There are rear seat belts in the car (tucked under the rear seat) they are in fair condition and need a good cleaning and there are no front seat belts. Also missing is the bucket seat backing chrome trim. The speedometer also does not work. I think it needs a new cable. There was no radio in the car when I bought it so this is some of the little details I’m leaving for the next guy to tinker with. Heater/A/C: This is a factory A/C car but the compressor, engine brackets, hoses and condenser are all missing. That said the heater core doesn’t leak, but the blower motor is not working. This car is a prime candidate for a Vintage Air conversion. Tires/Wheels: Brand new 15 X 7 American Racing Wheels Torque Thrust Mag wheels all the way around. There are235/60R/15 Performance Radials up front tires up front and out back there is 275/50R/15 BF Goodrich Radial TA's out pack Suspension: Stock suspension and springs, the lift in the ride height has been achieved using rubber spring expanders. I had the front end aligned and a new tie rod installed. It tracks straight and suspension is good shape with a nice ride. Exhaust: Nice full dual exhaust system with 2.25” pipes and what appears to be factory style large body muffler. The engine is equipped with headers. The exhaust note is factory sounding with a deep idle note and comfortable tone at speed. It is in good condition with no leaks or rust through. Rear Differential: The rear end features a Pontiac 10 bolt equipped with 4.11:1 gears posit-traction. No noises or leaks, but these are some tall gears making for a top cruising speed of 45-55 mph. Great around town, and the car accelerates like a rocket, but not much for long road trips. Transmission: The 400 THM automatic is 1973 PX code transmission. Fluid is clear and red. It shifts crisp under normal driving conditions and will squawk the tires when shifted into 2nd gear under power thanks to a B & M shift kit. No apparent leaks visually Brakes: This car is equipped with four wheel drum brakes. The shoes appear to have been recently replaced, but I installed a new master cylinder, and wheel cylinders and front hoses. Brake lines are clean and free of rust and work as designed. Emergency brake is not operational. Engine: The engine is very interesting and a clever use of off the shelf parts to build a nice street motor. I can’t say if it has been rebuilt or assembled from low mileage used components. Based on the overall operation, lack of blow by and strong oil pressure, my guess is it was rebuilt. The block is a 1972 YX code 400 CID block. It is topped with a set of 1972 7H1 heads from a 350 V8 Firebird. These heads have a larger exhaust valve, 1.66 yet the smaller 1.94 intake valves, and a smaller combustion chamber at 86cc’s. The smaller valves create a better flow velocity at lower rpms which promotes a better and more consistent cylinder charge due to the velocity. The smaller combustion chamber also lends to an increase in compression, roughly 9.5:1-9:75:1. The intake is an Edelbrock Performer and the pre-heat passage has been blocked off and a 17057274 1977 Firebird Trans Am Quadrajet 4BBL sits on top. It breathes through a set of unnamed headers that fit well with no dents or dings. The motor is responsive, and pulls well. My guess it has a stock camshaft because it has that characteristic Pontiac rumble that always reminds me of an old Chris Craft wood hull boat. Assembling this combination on the Desktop Dyno netted 300HP with 395 ft lbs of torque. It is fired by a GM HEI ignition. I tuned it up with new wires, cap, rotor and spark plugs and re-curved the mechanical advance with a performance curve. The carburetor was rebuilt and I modified the idle circuits and part throttle to give the engine a crisper throttle response. It also has an electric choke. I replaced the air cleaner, PCV valve, new belts, all coolant hoses, replaced the coolant with fresh antifreeze and a 160 degree thermostat. It also has a new fuel pump and inline fuel filter. There is no smoke of any kind at start up, or any knocks or ticks cold or when warmed up. It holds a consistent 40 lbs of oil pressure. The engine compartment has a nice used car/car show detail and does not disappoint when you pop the hood. This is a really nice car with all the difficult items of most car projects already addressed. You have a few items you can address to satisfy your tinkering need and make it your own, but the reality is when this car is delivered to your door you can drive it now! It is a great base for a GTO Clone, or even take it to the next level performance wise and do some bracket racing. Either way this car turns head and is fun to drive and cruise as is. Please inspect the pictures and ask questions. I have tried to describe this car is carefully as possible but understand the vehicle is sold as pictured, as is, with no warranty, implied or otherwise.
