Description of 1962 Pontiac Lemans/ Tempest/ Convertible -- |
Stk 2325 1962 Pontiac Lemans Tempest Convertible The Pontiac Tempest has quite a history. The model was introduced in 1961 as a compact to compete with Ford Chrysler and other GM entries. The early Tempests were unique for GM - in many ways they were test platforms for new engineering concepts. The 1961 Tempest was America's first automobile produced with 4-wheel independent suspension and a front engine/rear transmission configuration. A 1963 model was a star in the movie 'My Cousin Vinnie'. In 1964 a second-gen Tempest changed the landscape of automotive history when 'the boys out back' installed a 389ci V8. That said our first-generation 1962 Tempest Lemans convertible was totally restored (off-sub-frame) in Southern California in 1993. It is powered by the 193ci 4-cylinder that is basically the right bank of the 389 V8. There were five versions of this 4-cylinder offered in 1962 and this one is the High Output motor with 4-barrel carb and 166bhp. It is believed to be the factory engine and was totally rebuilt by Pontiac specialist Bruce Fulper - Rock and Roll Engineering Terrace CA. The rear transaxle is a rare 4-speed fully synchronized unit with 3.55:1 final gearing. Steel wheels are 15" and braking is manual 4-wheel drum. The re-spray of Artic White was professionally done and is in outstanding condition. Wide-whites and full factory wheel covers complete the package. A white vinyl power top is also in prime condition. We saved the best for last - the red vinyl interior is stunning. To paraphrase another car-guy -"If you can find a better 1962 Tempest buy it." This Lemans convertible will soon be in a new Poncho-lover's garage .ALL VEHICLES SOLD "AS IS". |
