Description of 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 10TH ANNIVERSARY |
1979 Silver Anniversary Trans Am. 25,805 Original Mile Car This 10th Anniversary Trans Am made some important milestones for Pontiac, one being it was the last year the legendary Pontiac 400 engine that started in the 1967 GTO was used in a production Pontiac, in fact; due to a limited availability of them left at GM they were only used when the 4 Speed manual trans was ordered. So, this year closed the chapter for Pontiac 400 as well as a 4-speed manual trans, only 1,817 were sold in this Anniversary Trans Am of the approximate 7,500 Anniversary cars sold. The other milestone was the question if they would sell as their MSRP exceeded $10,000 for the first time. As history would record not only did they sell but they sold to many collectors that paid up to a $10,000 premium past MSRP! This vehicle is a prime example of that collector car life as it has less than 26,000 miles as of now. I purchased the car and after some thought wanted to preserve its originality but make sure it was reliable as well, so here is a partial list of the items I tended to. The paint was original and paint of this era even with care showed its age as well as the decals. So off to the body shop for a complete strip of the rust-free car and modern 2 stage materials were used, a $6,000 investment for the paint work alone but it started a pyramid of other things in conjunction, new Phoenix Graphics Decal kit ($800), all new weather strip kit including T-Top seals, nose emblem, 4 new chrome center caps as well. Next, engine items, reproduction GM radiator hoses and new heater hoses, one on the right requires fender removal to access and it was already disassembled at the body shop, heck put a new GM blower motor as it too is hidden with the fender on! The power antenna was slow, so a new GM power antenna as well that is activated when the radio is turned on. So new antifreeze aalso. Next, synthetic rear diff fluid + the GM posi additive for a no clutch chatter around corners, heck while under it new Synthetic trans fluid as well for the 4 speed, and of course synthetic engine oil as well, all fluids were done as the master cylinder fluid looked bad from sitting, so a rebuilt original GM Master cylinder was installed and the system flushed along with a wheel bearing pack and new GM ceramic disc brake pads installed both front and rear. When installing the pads I noticed the shocks were leaking so a new set of gas shocks were installed. Also, the front sway bar link kits were cracking and replaced with black ploy graphite for an upgrade the looks OEM. The engine got a new distributor cap, rotor, and GM plug wires as well as plugs and fuel filter. When the filter was removed I found too much rust in it, so I dropped the gas tank to a peak, the years sitting got to it, so a new tank was installed. Next the date codes were checked on what looked like new tires but were over 10 years old, a new set of TA Radials fixed that and boy it I feel the difference! Last mechanical item, I just could not stand the original rusty exhaust system, so a new aluminized system was installed with new 3 chamber Flowmasters and polished stainless exhaust tips to boot! Moving on inside, the leather showed surface cracking from prolonged storage, so a new set of covers were installed. The rest of the vehicle remains original and all numbers matching right down to the distributor, starter, carburetor, water pump, alternator to mention a few. Yes, engine, trans, heads, and rear diff match as well. The original, not a reproduction build sheet has been kept with the car, owner's manual and even the original first title issued. Drive it anywhere, everything works except for the rally clock next to the tach, but the original AM - FM Digital 8 Track radio has a clock that works in it. When I tried an 8 track it worked but on the third one the rubber belt snapped and the replacement one from ebay has not arrived yet but the radio works and sounds great! Scheduled to go to a local auction this Sunday, the reason for the short auction. So I must make sure the car is sold and paid for ASAP to avoid taking it. I will listen to each circumstance and with a reasonable deposit that is non-refundable I will work with you. The car is sold where is as is and the to auction. Buyer is responsible for transportation. A very good road mannered car, comfortable at 75 mph @ 2,850 rpm. Clear California title in hand along with a California Smog Cert done 3 days ago so it could change hands in California no problem. |
