Description of 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Trans Am |
To commemorate Trans Am's 10th year, Pontiac decided to offer its first Special Anniversary Trans Am as a Replica Daytona 500 Pace car. To the Trans Am purist it's also known as aY89. Of those 7,500 Pace cars, only1,817had theL78 6.6L 400cimillrated @ 220hpand theBorgWarner T-10 4-speed manual transmission. Another unique feature to this Anniversary edition was the red illuminated gauges. All 10th Anniversary T/A's had A/C, power windows, locks, trunk release and cruise control as standard equipment, let's not forget theMirrored removable T-Tops. The only option was actually a "delete" option....if you opted for the more powerful 4 speed manual, the cruise control was removed, it was only available with the Automatic. Today this two-tone silver T/A sits a true beauty with only 46,000 actual miles registering on its odometer. You would never guess that this Firebird is 40 years old. The flawless body looks absolutely stunning and is covered with a fresh and very wet looking two-tone finish. Paint job with proper Platinum Silver color code WA7022 and the accented Dark Charcoal code WA7054.Spies Hecker was the paint of choice, a 4 coat Paint Process-High Solid clear which was sanded and polished to a mirror like finish. Body was totally stripped down, it should be considered a frame on restoration. Lot's of paperwork will come with the car including aPHSwhich confirms this Bird is the real deal. Inside you will notice a perfect original dash board, no dash caps here with a modern Bluetooth stereo that sounds incredible!` Phoenix Graphix top quality molded decals were applied, Expanding into the fenders is a special massive screaming chicken decal that rests on the hood which is unique to the 10th Anniversary T/A. Above the decal is the hood shaker that has the lettering T/A 6.6 on both sides. On the roof you will find correct, mirrored T-tops(unique to the Pace car). At the back of the car is a 3 piece rear spoiler and more Trans Am Lettering. Pop the hood on this Firebird and you'll find theoriginal numbers matchingL78 6.6L 400ci V8. Due to emission standards, 1979 was the very last year that Pontiac offered the Big block engine. Bolted to the 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8 is theoriginal numbers matching4-speed Borg Warner Super T-10 transmission, which sends power to a3.23 Posi-traction rear end. Power 4-wheel disc brakes are strong and do a great job slowing down this Bird, while the car rides on special 15x8 turbo cast aluminum wheels that have been wrapped in brand new slightly wider (245 instead of 225) BF Goodrich rubber. Open the door to this Trans Am and you'll find a very well preserved and fully restored silver leather interior with beautiful embroidered screaming chickens on the door panels and the center of the back seat. Door panels and package tray are new and so is the carpet....list goes on. Here's some great detail of what makes a 10th Anniversary Pace Car Trans Am so special: Manual cars have the Pontiac motor rated at 220hp and only 1817 cars were produced with manual transmission out of the 7500 total, the rest were Automatic with an Oldsmobile engine rated at 185hp.
