Description of 1940 Pontiac Coupe

1940 Pontiac Coupe

The Pontiac name and emblem both have Native American roots. The defunct GM division was named after Chief Pontiac, the courageous Indian leader who had led a rebellion against the British in the 1760's. The original logo of the Pontiac brand, which GM introduced in 1926, was an Indian headdress.

Formerly known as the Pontiac Torpedo Streamliner, now a sleek and sensually curved hot rod that has been lovingly cared for by our consigner for the past 16 years. This car was his pride and joy, and it was driven for fun, and to shows. It has been beautifully caressed on the exterior work and has a supercharger on top of a 350ci crate V8 under the hood. A totally custom interior, and some snappy 15-inch wheels, and now we have a goer and a shower!

Exterior
So as not to break up the wonderfully curved lines the chrome bumpers have been shaved, leaving just the naked body which in front has a Groucho Marx mustache style grille which is fronted by a curving nose in a continuation of the hood. Molded in headlights are flanking the hood and blend seamlessly into the bulbous front fenders. The hood cowling is open for business and shows a peek of the powerhouse underneath. Long slightly curved doors shaved of their handles have consistent gaps and hold chrome framed glass all around. A bulbed rear also shaved of its bumper has eye shaped frenched in taillights flanked by rounded rear fenders, and next to a rounded trunk lid. The running boards are body color, Maroon Metallic, and are straight and true. Dual 2.5-inch exhaust tips are looking out from below. On all 4 corners are 15-inch fan style wheels that show some delaminating of the chrome on the blades.

Interior
A pop of the door from inside, since there are no exterior handles, and we can see crushed velour door panels with custom billet style machined aluminum handles and cranks. This leads our eye into the original looking dash also in Maroon Metallic with a black faced instrument cluster panel peppered with white faced gauges from Stewart Warner. An aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/Cassette radio is neatly installed into the dash, and on the passenger's side the original Pontiac badging with a large central plate and dual horizontal wings with Pontiac Deluxe written in your grandmother's handwriting. Charcoal gray leather neatly covers overstuffed buckets in front, and a couch like rear 2 plus 2 bench. A B&M shifter rises from gray carpet on the floors and is mirrored above by a nice tight maroon headliner.

Drivetrain
Where's the Beef??...well it's definitely under here in the form of a 350ci crate V8 with aluminum heads and topped by a Demon 4-barrel carburetor and stoked with a Weiand supercharger. On back is a 700 R4 4-speed automatic transmission, working in conjunction with a Ford 9-inch rear. Consigner states that a dual 4-barrel setup also comes with this car.

Undercarriage
All clean and rust-free underneath with a solid X frame, good body hangers, and a like new exhaust featuring Turbo mufflers. Some neatly fished wiring, a cooler unit and a grease free environment are also seen. Disc brakes have been added to the front, and drums are on the rear.

Drive-Ability
Slipping inside these seats are to die for...hand me the remote and headphones and I'm off to a nap! BUT I digress and fire this car up and went for my test run. this car popped and sputtered, could be due to old gas or a tuneup needed but it was difficult to get it running smoothly. It did have solid steering and all working components. A nice ride and potential neck snapper once the running smooth issue is ironed out.

A truly loved and pampered car for the consigner who took care of it for 16 years. A beautiful exterior, nice shape, shaved rodder, and overall great example of the Torpedo Streamliner coupe form 1940.
