This beautiful two-door 1956 Pontiac Chieftain 860 Special Wagon retains its external styling cues but offers much more under the hood. Noted in 1956 advertising as high style comes to low-priced wagons, this scarce model has been treated to a nut-and-bolt frame-off restoration that takes its 1950s packaging to new heights, thanks to the addition of a Tri-Power-equipped 1958 Pontiac 370 CI Strato-Streak engine mated to the Strato-Flight Hydra-Matic transmission. The Chieftain was one of Pontiacs well-established model names by this time, and the two-door version featuring a station-wagon cab was part of the initial 1955 redesign of the brands vehicle line. At that time, the top powerplant was the first Pontiac V-8, displacing 287 CI. This example replaces that with nearly an additional 100 CI in the 370 CI package, factory rated at 270 HP with its three Rochester 2-barrel carburetors now under GTO-type chrome air cleaners. With the engine rumbling gently through dual exhaust, the exterior is painted in a combination of Sun Beige yellow and bright white, with premium chrome hood and headlamp trim, the lighted hood ornament, three-quarter-length side spears, Pontiac script lettering fore and aft, a full-width sun visor and chrome door visors. Inside is a gray and white vinyl six-passenger interior with a split front bench and fold-down rear seat, the deluxe Electra-Matic AM radio, power steering, in-dash clock and two-spoke steering wheel with full horn ring. This car has power steering as well, and it also features classic full-size wheel covers, wide whitewall tires, mild-relief bullet tips designed into the front bumper guards, paired rear exhaust ports, surf-motif glass-mounted decals and a drivers-side exterior mirror. Offered with an assortment of manuals, books and brochures, this wonder wagon presents a package of 1950s-era technology with touches that will create interest beyond mere appreciation. Beyond that, all two-door station wagons retain a special place in the marketplace, and this example is pure Pontiac excitement.
