Description of 1968 Pontiac Firebird |
Here's an interesting twist on this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro: it's actually a Firebird. That's right, the look is absolutely Chevy, but the VIN and under the skin is a Pontiac. And that's not even where the interesting story on this one ends. With a fuel-injected LS V8 and four-wheel disc brakes, this black coupe is also a restomod. So if you love talking about your classic as much as driving it, you know this is something distinctly different. The nice thing about GM's F-body twins is most panels are built to fit on the same unibody. But this is not just some weekend wrenching. The roofline and the doors are similar, but there's a ton of Pontiac that doesn't fit on a Chevy. The bumpers, fenders, hood, rear panel, and so much more are exclusive to each line. So it took extra time and effort to create the coupe... and that's actually a good thing. After all, that extra work means people will be admiring the straightness of the sheetmetal even when they don't know this car's secret. The black paint has a nice shine to show off the coupe's curves, and it's just a professional buff away from a true next-level finish. This even has all the right pieces you love on a Camaro, like SS badging, provisions for the RS hidden headlight front end, and bright Z/28 dual racing stripes. A deep chin spoiler, cowl induction hood, full-width rear spoiler, and upgraded US Mags wheels with an aggressive 18/20 inch front/rear stagger all give this the look and stance of a true performance machine. The full Chevy transformation continues inside. After all, the houndstooth cloth inserts in the upholstery are practically a Camaro icon. You have traditional pieces like the grippy three-spoke sports steering wheel and a center console with horseshoe shifter. The heater controls show that this was likely even a factory A/C car (most of the components will need to be returned to get it functioning again.) This is joined by well-integrated upgrades like a retro-style AM/FM digital tuner with aux input. The Camaro dash was added with a clean and complete look, but the gauges are an upgraded set from Dakota Digital that offer better info and crisp markings. While this car has two bloodlines, the lineage comes together a bit under the hood. After all, both the 4th gen Firebird and Camaro featured LS power as the top motor. This 5.3-liter V8 is from different part of the GM family line, but it's still a true fuel-injected LS powerhouse, and so it's a very welcomed addition under the hood. The gloss black intake and bright red FAST fuel rails give it a sporty look. And the large aluminum radiator with electric fans help keep this upgrade running cool. There's even a nice set of shorty headers that help give this distinct coupe a distinctive sound from the dual exhaust. Power steering and the three-speed automatic transmission are great for driving. Plus, the modern ZR-rated tires and upgraded four-wheel power disc brakes with drilled & slotted rotors mean there's upgraded control to go with the upgraded power. You can keep this car's true secret between you and the DMV if you really want to, but quite frankly, we all love a cool car with an even cooler story. So don't miss this Camaro/Firebird restomod.
