Description of 1968 Pontiac Catalina |
ORIGINAL 428 (376hp) CATALINA CONVERTIBLE WITH TRIPOWER ADDED !!! ORIGINAL 1968 Pontiac Catalina Convertible– 2+2 Tribute Car. This is a United States built awesome factory original 428 (375 hp / 472 lbs tq. – Correct “YH” Engine Code & #16 Heads; Head Code Date: A238; Engine Casting# 9792968; Block# 28P249128; ) with the factory long branch header type exhaust manifolds & a 400 turbo transmission (see the factory Build Sheet photo below). This car was loaded from the factory – convertible power top, 428 motor, Turbo 400 trans, dash gauges, closing Headlights (functional), bucket seats – power Driver’s Seat, center console with Pontiac Vacuum Gauge, front Power Disc Brake, Power Steering, dual exhaust, and 10 bolt rear end with 3.08 highway gears. May be last year for the little red Indian Head Chief bright lights indicator located below the speedometer. Original Build Sheet included (see photo below). Also included is the PHS (Pontiac Historical Society) info on this car. I purchased this car a few years ago in great condition. This car is a great road cruiser – only reason I am selling is I just purchased a 1971 Pontiac GTO convertible 455HO car and I am out of garage space. This vehicle is a great cruiser it drives and rides great – my wife and I have taken it on several 2 hour cruises (4 hr round trip) out of town with no problems ! I am NOT a dealer – just a small time personal collector and I hate to let this car go! ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN. 30 years of maintenance/repair records since 1988 came with this car (and I have the records on what I have done to the car) – and the Build Sheet (see photo below). The records show that at different points over the years before I purchased the car the 428 engine, Turbo 400 transmission, & Quadrajet had been rebuilt and they operate great. Numerous other parts were also replaced including but not limited to: front sway bar & pitman arm; trunk weatherstrip; alternator & voltage regulator; pinion seal; brake master cylinder & brakes; real axle seals, wheel bearings & brake shoes; automatic flex plate; convertible top latch & hooks, and Top pump & motor; Heater Core; Hood to Cowl seal & Hood Pad insulation; fuel line hoses; Fuel Lever Sensor & Sending Unit; Radiator (4 core), with High Flow Air fan & spacer; Starter Hi Torque mini; and a great Panasonic AM/FM CD player radio (hidden behind the dash ashtray door – see photo below) and new speakers; and a red paint job & new white interior with black carpet. The seller had just installed a nice sounding complete Exhaust System right before I bought the car. MY IMPROVEMENTS. This car was in great shape when I purchased it three years ago. The improvements I have made are as follows: COIL SPRINGS & SHOCKS – factory tension rated coil springs & new shocks installed – Air Shocks in the rear; TIRES & RIMS – new 15x6 chrome Rally I wheels, center caps, & lugs; new 15 inch Diamondback radials with dual Redlines; front end alignment performed; NEW TRIPOWER setup – (built by a guy who does nothing but build Pontiac Tripower setups) ’66 Pontiac Tripower setup (installed July 2022): new aluminum manifold, NASCAR style carb seats; new Center Carb, rebuilt front & rear carb, new fuel lines, new linkage, new Electric choke, new water neck; new 160 degree thermostat; new foam air cleaners & bases, Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses; New MSD Pro-Billet Distributor, Taylor spark plug wires, and spark plugs; installed a new ELECTRIC PUSHER FUEL PUMP (2-4 psi) mostly to help with startup when car has not been driven much – engine also still has the Mechanical Fuel pump; new WATER & TEMP gauges console mounted; new Upper & Lower Power Steering hoses; FLOOR MATS - NOS white “PONTIAC” mats; added new EXHAUST SPLITTERS; new WOOD DASH Veneer installed; BATTERY CABLES new Positive (with heat shield) & Negative cables installed; new Battery; and new engine Ground Straps kit to improve electrical grounding. EMBLEMS. As a tribute to the ’68 Canadian Pontiac 2+2 cars (see the Canadian Pontiac dealer brochure photo below – called a Parisienne in Canada), I added the "428" emblems and "2+2" emblems, the front fender fins, the "TriPower" emblems and the "Royal Bobcat" emblem on the trunk - all the emblems are all held on by 3M tape and can be removed if you like – but I think they look very cool on the car. CONDITION. Car is very solid and not rusted – has some type of undercoating (see the pics below). EXHAUST SYSTEM was new when I purchased the car three years ago.428 Engine runs great & transmission shifts nicely. Brakes work well and so does the rear end. Top & rear glass window in very good shape. Trunk area clean with new trunk mat & spare tire cover. Convertible top works great. Factory Dash gauges do not work – but the new SW Retro Water Temp & Oil gauges I installed in the console work great. Fuel Gauge not working correctly – a newer Fuel Sending unit was installed prior to my purchase so it must be the dash fuel gauge – SW sells a matching Retro Fuel Gauge as well if you want to match it to the console gauges. Power antenna was added by a prior owner & is non-functional. Closing Headlights do work. Paint is in good condition, buffed and waxed, a little thin on the trunk area but not really noticeable - I had the usual road chips touched up & filled in. Speedometer works good. Great sounding AM/FM/CD radio hidden behind the old dash ash tray door & nice speakers. The original 14 inch Rally II wheels that came on the car will go with the sale as well as the original factory intake manifold, Quadrajet, and air cleaner (see photos below). Odometer says 25,672 so I am sure it has rolled over. Serious Bidders may message me with questions on the car. NO TIRE KICKERS PLEASE ! INSPECTIONS. Inspections are welcomed as long as they occur BEFORE the close of the auction or purchase. Any Serious Bidder can buy their own inspection and I will work with the inspector to schedule an inspection. No inspections after the close of auction or the purchase.
