The GT-37 was advertised as the “Poor Man’s GTO”. The GT-37 was essentially a stripped-down performance carfor those on a tight budget. The carwas sporty while being insurance-friendly.In 1971 the GT-37 was a package on the Lemans hardtops. It came with some special features such as hood locking pins, Rally II wheels, dualexhaust with rear valence exit, body striping, heavy-duty three-speed manualtransmission with Hurst floor shifter, and special GT-37 emblems on the frontfenders and trunk lid. Theearly GT-37’s had the '69 Judge-style eyebrowstripes. About mid-year the stripe waschanged to the sword style stripe.Driving the rear wheels was a 250hp, 350-cu.in. V-8 three-speed manual;however, there were three different 400-cu.in engines with a four-speed orautomatic options available. To add even more power there was two options for a455-cu.in engine. A total of 5,802 GT-37swere produced with 5,015 350s; 718 with 400s engines, and just 69 with 455s. This car is number 28,121 of 29,466 Lemansmade in 1971. Production sequence numbers are not tracked by options and theGT-37 was an option on the Lemans. Itwas produced the last week of April 1971. The frame was blastedand painted black, all new brakes and brake lines installed. A fresh set of rubber was mounted on theRally II wheels. A new gas tank and gaslines were installed. This car has a 350cubic inch 4-BBL with a 4 speed (not a standard configuration). The motor was bored .030 with forged pistonsand a Ram Air III cam. The pointsignition system was upgraded to HEI. Thecarb is a Holley 850cfm it sits on an Edelbrock intake. Ram air exhaustmanifolds were installed to save clearance issues with big tube headers. Itdyno tested at 340 HP without the ram air manifolds. The estimate now is themotor is putting out about 350 HP. Theinterior is different than the GTO, which had bucket seats, it has a benchseat. The bench seat was lighter andprovided more body stability than the GTO bucket seats. The entire interior hadto be redone as the car’s original interior color was parchment. A new dash was acquired from Just Dash. All new interior parts were purchased fromOriginal Parts Group Inc. After marketradio was installed as original was impossible to find in working condition.
