Description of 1989 Pontiac Firebird TRANS AM

This is an 89 Trans Am GTA with all original drivetrain.

Vehicle Details

I've owned this car since the 90s. It was put in storage, an enclosed semi trailer, in 2001 or 2002. Took it out last year, replaced the fuel pump with a new OEM pump, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, air filter and most of the hoses. Also rebuilt the headlight motors, so they work perfect.

This car has a Crane Hi6 ignition, updated Bosch injectors, adjustable FPR with pressure gauge, Edelbrock headers, Flowmaster exhaust, hi flow dry media intake. Most of the rubber hoses have been replaced with silicone. The car was not setup to drag race or burn tires, it was setup to take corners, basically a Grand Touring car like it's namesake.

The car is lowered with eibach springs and KYB adjustable shocks, Hotchkis sway bars, suspension has all urethane bushings. 18" OZ Monte Carlo wheels, 18-8.5 front and 18-10 rear. They were the widest I could fit and still one of the best looking 5 spoke wheels ever made.

This car is impressive through the turns.

Being a California car, there is no rust. The car was stored in the High Desert in an enclosed cargo box, so no moisture, no corrosion.

The interior is in great condition. I changed the interior from tan to gray around 98. A new headliner was installed at that time, it still looks like new. Also has the matching upholstered t-top inserts. Has a custom dash cover that's been on it since new, so no cracks.

The stereo bezel is modified for a standard double din stereo, instead of the odd factory 1.5 size. The car is fully wired for high end amps and speakers, including in door separates and subwoofers in the quarter panels. No loss of trunk space. The entire chassis has sound dampening material installed under the carpet. This is the same as high end luxury cars. It helped quiet the car substantially, at least creaks and road noise. Nothing will quiet the 5.7, headers and Flowmaster.

Now the bad:

The car had been partially repainted before I bought it, the paint is yellowed from age and not uniformly, there are chips and scratches. The spoiler has cracking at the base. It needs a paint job.

The stereo system was removed and sold before it was put into storage. As it cost nearly as much as the car at the time. All the oversized wiring is there and ready to drop in modern electronics or you can track down vintage class A Soundstream amps and JL subs and Focal separates if you like 90s competition audio nostalgia.

The tires are from 2001, new right before I put it in storage. A couple of them have age cracks. I'm not changing them as they are further proof of the car being stored this long inside. They hold air, but I wouldn't drive on the freeway with them.

The struts for the hatch and hood are weak, they need replacing. The hood will stay up mostly, the hatch will not.

The engine needs a proper tune. The ECU has never been tuned and with the high flow injectors, intake, headers and exhaust, I think it would benefit from it.

The idle has never been smooth like stock, it idles more like a muscle car with mods. The power is great and throttle response is amazing, but I think it can be even better if tuned. Better yet, install a good cam and then tune, which had been my plan.

The car has common issues of a car that sit for 20+ would have, chassis needs to be lubed, window regulators need to be cleaned and lubed. The windows work, but they are slow. The hatch struts don't hold the hatch up.

This is car for perfect for someone that wants a really nice classic touring car. With new paint, it will be beautiful. It's ready to drop in audio gear, so it will sound amazing. Mechanically, it's great, never abused or raced, less than 100k miles, top notch suspension components.

Let me know if you have any questions or need specific photos. Please, no low ball type offers. I'm very attached to this car and it's already hard to sell. I am not going to sell it for next to nothing, may as well keep it and drive it once in awhile. I would like to see it go to someone who will complete it and drive it. These cars seem to have become either clapped out beaters, weekend drag racers or mint, stock, garage queens. This forum seems to be the only place where there are still people that appreciate them for more than that, so I'm listing it here exclusively for now.

Thanks for looking!
