Description of 1966 Porsche 912 |
1966 PORSCHE 912 COUPE When Porsche were considering a replacement for the venerable 356, hey realized that the significant price increase the new six cylinder car (the 901, ater re-designated the 911) would have to command over the existing 356 models, ight be seen as a bit too much to chew and that consequently sales and company perception could suffer as a result. They therefore decided to create a 'bridge' model that would be built and sold alongside the 911 but at a price point similar to the outgoing 356. It proved to be a perfect amalgam of the two. Styled by Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche (who incidentally, as essentially kicked out of design school after only one year, s they doubted his talents!), he new body from the 911 coupled with the well-proven four-cylinder engine from the 356. The 912 therefore combined sensational new styling with tremendous handling and good performance and great reliability with simple, ow cost maintenance. It was an instant success and significantly outsold the 911 for the first few years of production. As per the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, his particular car was delivered new in April 1966 and optioned with headrests, og lights and the highly desirable five-speed transmission. It has just completed a five-year refurbishment, oth cosmetic and mechanical, ncluding new paint, eather and carpets and a complete rebuild of the engine and transmission. The body and undercarriage are arrow straight and rust free with excellent shut lines. The Fuchs alloys have been chromed and polished and all the engine ducting has been powder coated. Consequently, t not only looks great but drives superbly too! Though overshadowed for a long time by its big brother, he 912 has really come in to its own of late, ultivating a tremendous following and, ith values rising daily, his represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a very nicely sorted, ust-free example that can be regularly enjoyed for years to come.
