Description of 1981 Porsche 911 2 Door Coupe

1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa. Same owner for the past 27 years (1989). U.S. model. Original and very rare ice blue metallic color with dark blue interior. This Porsche is in good to very good condition inside and out.

EXTERIOR: The body is in very good shape. Not perfect, but no obvious dings or dents to speak of (at least nothing that cannot easily be addressed should you choose to repaint it at some point.) The door and hood gaps are all in excellent, uniform condition. The paint is old and is showing its age, but still looks good from a short distance away. My pictures of the exterior were taken 10 feet from the car so you can envision what it might look like parked in your own driveway. As you can see, it still looks very presentable - nice and shiny, but as stated previously, I’m sure there are people who would prefer to have the car re-painted sooner rather than later.

INTERIOR: The interior is in very good overall condition. The only flaws of any significance are a small tear in the center of the driver’s seat, tape on the original factory steering wheel, and the headliner could use either some gluing or possible replacement. It is also missing the driver’s side floor mat. The rest of the interior is in great condition including the crack-free dashboard. The lights, blinkers, wipers, horn and power windows all work as they should. The odometer stopped working at 90,000 miles. I do not know what the actual mileage is. I did however, call Palo Alto Speedometer and they quoted me $300 to repair it with a 2-3 day turnaround.

MECHANICALS: This 1981 911 SC was last registered in 2010 (always stored in a heated garage). For several years it was periodically driven to keep the battery charged. However, until a couple of weeks ago, it had not been started in 2+ years. So I took it to a Porsche mechanic and he drained the gas tank, installed a new Porsche specific Interstate battery and it fired right up! After it was warmed up, he had me take it on a short test drive (about a mile) taking it up to about 60mph. It runs and drives great, but seemed to smoke quite a bit. The mechanic said the smoke is typical due to oil in the cylinders from sitting dormant for so long without being started. He says the car simply needs to be driven and the smoke will eventually go away. This 911 leaks zero oil onto the ground even after sitting for a couple of weeks. The steering, clutch, transmission and brakes all feel excellent although the brakes hang-up ever so slightly. Once again, the car needs to be driven! The A/C pump has been taken off at some point, but I have it. Also, the heat exchangers have been removed and replaced. This 911 sounds awesome!

The car has always been garaged and not driven during the winter months. The floor pans, suspension areas, etc. are all in outstanding original condition. Any minor areas of surface rust (chips, nicks, etc.) have been touched-up. The only area of “through the metal” rust is a ½” hole next to the headlight (please see picture). Make no mistake, this 911 will need some work. However, it is extremely solid and has an amazing amount of upside and potential for someone who wants to do a little work on it and enjoys tinkering with German sports cars. I guess you could call it your “Tinker Toy!”

I would like to sell my 1981 911SC as soon as possible. My wife and I are currently in escrow on a new home for our retirement and the proceeds from the sale of my car will help pay for some of the new furnishings. Consequently, I have set my reserve price very low, which reflects my desire to expedite the sale process. Being an auction format, obviously I am not going to divulge my reserve price. However, I will tell you that it is under $20K! I am simply looking for a smooth, uncomplicated “AS IS” sale in exchange for a great vintage Porsche with lots of different possibilities for the new owner.

Please attempt to view my Porsche during the 7-day auction time frame. I am retired and free to show it just about any time at your convenience. If you are unable to do so, and are either uncomfortable or unwilling to purchase a car such as mine without seeing it in person before paying for it in full, then please do not bid on it. Payment in full (wire or cashier’s check) is expected within 72 hours of the end of the auction, so please have your funds in place.

My 1981 911SC Targa is being sold in “AS IS” condition with the original 27-year old clear/clean and SIGNED Massachusetts title. It is also being sold WITHOUT a California smog certificate due to the aforementioned circumstances.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Although I am not a body shop owner, nor mechanically inclined, and certainly not a Porsche “guru,” I will attempt to address any questions you may have as honestly as possible.

Please do not email me. I WILL NOT RESPOND. Simply call me directly at 916-220-2460. I live in the Sacramento area of California. Thanks!
