1957 Porsche 356 Speedster Tribute The history of the Porsche Company began long before Ferdinand Porsche thought of starting his own auto manufacturing business. Over his career, he worked with Daimler, Mercedes, Daimler-Benz, Volkswagen, Auto Union, and others for nearly 50 years. Like its cousin, the Volkswagen Beetle(which FerrySr. had designed), the 356 is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car with unitizedpan and body construction. Ferry Porsche described the thinking behind the development of the 356 in an interview with the editor ofPanorama, the PCA magazine, in September 1972. "I had always driven very speedy cars. I had an Alfa Romeo, also a BMW and others....By the end of the war I had a Volkswagen Cabriolet with a supercharged engine and that was the basic idea. I saw that if you had enough power in a small car it is nicer to drive than if you have a big car which is also overpowered. And it is more fun. On this basic idea we started the first Porsche prototype. To make the car lighter, to have an engine with more horsepower...that was the first two seater that we built in Carinthia". It is Registered and Clean Titled in Virginia simply as a "1964 VW" (using the authentic DMV approved VIN of the original donor car) and therefore is considered a Historical/Vintage vehicle which means it is Smog Exempt and can be insured as a Classic Car! The title is NOT a "special construction" title, so there are no Export issues. This Speedster is equipped with virtually every available Upgraded Option and offered on these cars when new. This adds about $6000.00 dollars in additional value compared to many similar examples being sold today. It has the Optional High Performance 2110cc Twin Carb 44mm 110 Cam Motor (30% more powerful) whereas most are sold with the passive 1600cc Motor. It has the Optional 3.88 Manual High Ratio 4 Speed Transmission with highway gearing known as the "Freeway Flyer". It is freshly assembled and has only 340 miles on it since it was built....so effectively just broken in, brand new! Retro California Black Plate comes with the car.
